NHL Awards Discussion

At the same time I'd be more surprised if the GMs were able to collectively make the correct decision on who should be GM of the year. Unlike every other award they give themselves the chance to vote after the 2nd round to make this easy on themselves.

That's fair. Also, not surprising they're also not great at taking into account the future position their fellow GMs have left their team facing. The Islanders are already near the cap ceiling and have to re-sign Beauvillier, Pelech, and Sorokin. They'll get an extra $6M to work with with Boychuk on LTIR, but that's still not likely enough to sign those 3 guys without losing a piece or two if they can't convince Seattle to take one of their rougher contracts off the books - and what that would cost, too.

Don't forget they have performance bonus money that counts against the cap next year(1.29) and the following(625500) as well for Green.

Yeah. Next season's bonuses are included in the numbers I'm using. They have ~$17K in free space before they start eating into Boychuk's LTIR coverage.

Well, McDavid won the Hart unanimously which probably is fair but, you know, it would have been nice to see Matthews get a vote or two. Still came in second though.

McDavid getting 100 unanimous votes for 1st I get.  I certainly understand Matthews getting 69 2nd place votes because you can make arguments for other guys being most valuable to their team....two people didn't even vote him top 5?

Man the angry at Marner crowd is out in force.  I'm not a huge fan of his PR game but how are people not understanding that he's a phenomenal regular season player who hasn't produced in big playoff games.  Also it seems like forward positions shouldn't be locked in by position when you don't do that for defensemen?

There's always a few voters who basically say "screw it, I'm going to vote for the guys I like instead of the guys that deserve it most" for their 2nd place and lower votes. Honestly, I'm surprised McDavid got all the 1st place votes (even though he definitely deserved them). I was sure someone would put him 2nd or something as a protest/refusing to allow unanimous decisions type vote.

Leading scorer among defencemen didn't receive a single Norris vote. I wonder if that's ever happened before.

Wow.

I mean, they're not wrong. He still wasn't great defensively. Natural Stat Trick has his xGF%, SCF%, and HDCF% all sitting around 50% - which, considering who he was often out on the ice with, isn't great.
