RedLeaf said:Alright, now that the NHL playoffs are officially over, some team needs to make a big trade and open up the floodgates to start the silly season.....
Who's gonna be the first big name to move?
Zee said:OK Burkie, announce the trade any time now.

Come on Zee. He has to wait at least until the Stanley Cup news isn't the TSN headline story.

RedLeaf said:That sounds about right. It could be one of the busiest summers ever for the Leafs. Hopefully we haven't built up our expectations too much as to what Burke can pull off. But I'm pretty pumped nonetheless.

I don't think the Leafs will be as busy as some people want/expect them to be. My guess is a couple depth signings and maybe one major trade (likely for a goalie) and that'll be about it. Prices for UFAs and in trades are likely to be weird this summer with the uncertainty around the new CBA. Every June we hear about there being a lot of trade talk and how it's going to be the most exciting trade season ever and so on, and pretty much every year, there are a couple notable deals (mostly within a week of the draft) and everything else is business as usual.

I agree. I think it was in a recent Nonis interview that he said they were looking heavily at the trade route. That hard enough in normal CBA circumstances.
The cap for next year at $70 mil is artificially high - it will very likely drop significantly with the new CBA. They have to/will want to re-sign Kulemin, Franson, Frattin, and some 4th liners. And they likely are going to replace Gustavsson. When all that settles, I wonder how much cap space they'll have left.
Before the month is out, I guess we'll know a bit more because they'll be deciding on Komisarek, Armstrong, Connolly & Lombardi as potential buyouts. So they might make some room that way. But there are so few marquis UFAs and the roster isn't the most attractive as a contender right now, I'm not expecting a major splash.
When Burke showed up, I think he was thinking about a faster turnaround, in part based upon the UFA market. But there really hasn't been much to be had on that market. Once again, there's a few like Suter or Parise currently unsigned but not a lot of top quality guys that match up to this teams biggest needs (a 1st line center, a goalie, a stud dman and some size).
I can't recall as barren a stretch for such talent as Burke has experienced since he arrived here and that's a key part of the reason I've cut him some slack.
RedLeaf said:That very well may be the case. The biggest splash Burke could possibly make might be at the draft table. Perhaps he makes a trade with EDM for the 1st overall pick, or deals players or picks for Luongo. I just have this feeling that a few bold moves are in store for us this off season.
Burke is feeling the heat now more than ever, and nothing will calm the waters or boost his ego more than a few big name acquisitions or bold moves at the draft to bolster the roster for next season. Burke's ego (and perhaps his job) can't suffer another dramatic season-ending slide out of a playoff spot. Not in his 5th year as GM. Not when he's missed the dance every single year he's been with the Leafs. We'll see something big happen this summer. I'm betting on it.
