Leafs play game 43 tonight. Thereafter, Nylander can be on the roster for the rest of the year + not accrue a season:
That being said, I think CtB is correct. Bad juju on MODO + desperate need on Marlies = Nylander on the Marlies to get a headstart on re-acclimatization + potential call up for NHL time without accruing a season.
Potvin29 said:As I understand it then, he could be on the Leafs roster and not accrue a season towards UFA but the 10 game limit would still apply to burning a year of his ELC.

CarltonTheBear said:Right, Drance said this was potentially a reverse-Draisaitl. The Oilers kept him up for the first half of the season and returned him before it cost them a year of UFA-service, while the Leafs could recall Nylander for the second half of the season to accomplish the same goal.
But given the reports from Cox and Mac that's obviously not really the plan. He'll be with the Marlies and it won't cost the Leafs a UFA year or an ELC year (assuming he doesn't play 10 NHL games).

If so, that would be good progression for Nylander.
Next year - full time NHL'er? Thoughts?

The Leafs have talked about not wanting to call up Connor Brown until he's set to play in the NHL full-time. So that basically rules him out of being called up when injuries hit. And Cox said they'll likely look at Nylander the same way. I think that's smart, unless the Leafs are out of the playoff race and want to play him in games 81 and 82 or something.

Yeah, that's definitely the smarter way to do things. If he really tears up the AHL, then maybe you reward him with a "this is what the NHL is like" one game call up or something, but, otherwise, I don't expect to see him make any appearance of note at the NHL level this season.
RedLeaf said:I could be wrong, but I'm not sure they view Connor Brown in the same light they do Nylander. Remember, Nylander got a very long look at training camp, and Brown....not so much.
I'm guessing they believe Nylander is much closer to being NHL ready than Brown.

I agree, but whoever said the Leafs are smart at doing things? :

You're right Nylander is definitely on a whole other level, but they do view Brown pretty highly too. I think the point is though they don't want to rush their top prospects. Brown's been by-far the Marlies best player this season, but hasn't been considered as a call-up when injuries have hit the Leafs. He's been deserving of a call-up but the Leafs don't want to rush him. So unless Nylander's being called up for good, I'd say expect him to stay with the Marlies all season long.

While they're still pretty slow at doing things, they're starting to get smart about them.
