Yeah he's gone.

I don't know if I'd agree he's definitely going to leave but I absolutely think there's a real chance that Tavares might be the start of more upper-tier UFA types wanting to actually test the market.

I have no doubt that guys like Stamkos and Hedman and whoever are happy where they are but you'd have to think there's a lot of guys out there who saw Tavares get the highest non-McDavid AAV in the league and getting to sign with his childhood team after being wooed hard by whoever he wanted and might start thinking it's be the better way to go.

Especially when they're considering leaving a team that isn't anywhere near contending for a Cup. Most guys who know they're going to get their money regardless are probably going to be less likely to hitch their wagons to teams that are bottoming out.

Lets not forget Stamkos actually met with other teams during the courting period- so essentially he tested the market but signed before July 1st so he could sign for 8 years.  He may not have waited for formal contract offers but clearly he didn't see greener pastures than TB.

I said I'm sure his situation is working for him but Tavares signing the big money deal seems like it would make bigger waves around the league.

Well, I think with Ottawa there's a separate thing. Unless the Senators have taken Herman's cue and think Karlsson is hot garbage, there's clearly a reluctance on their part to pay him the money he probably thinks he can get on the open market. If they're reluctant to pay their homegrown superstar market value then what will they do with someone like Duchene?

We already sort of saw it with Turris. If Ottawa is only going to sign guys who take below market deals to stay put then they're going to have some real problems going forward.

They released that at 10pm on a Monday, meaning somebody on their PR staff must have known it'd be relentlessly mocked but Melnyk probably kept bugging them to put it up.

My favourite part about the interview was when Borowiecki seemed to actually get a little candid saying how the dressing room needed to get closer together and how they needed help and outside resources to do that and was asking Melnyk what he was going to do about that... and Melnyk launched into a completely unrelated rant about how he would never move the team and how idiotic it was that some people around town felt like that was a possibility (Melynk himself floated the possibility of moving the team last winter).

Melnyk is pretty much at Ballard level now, minus the public statements of misogyny, homophobia and racism.

You have to hand it to them. They've managed to combine all the warmth and excitement of a hostage video with the authenticity and hucksterism of a timeshare presentation.

But the real thing that would concern me if I was a Sens fan is that Melnyk is probably telling the truth. I think he's pretty well established that he's not inclined to being realistic about his team's chances and, as a result, might not make the decisions he should regarding the team's future. He may very well just let Karlsson walk.

15 or 16 players turned over? It's going to be a long season in Ottawa. Ceci, Stone, Duchene, and Karlsson could all be unloaded.

Duchene for a second to the Leafs at the deadline to sure up our 4th line C position...

A few "insiders" have been saying this lately, but when McKenzie joins in I think it means a little more.
