I'm looking forward to seeing if Alfredsson gets booed by Leafs fans on home ice in Detroit. Especially now that the Red Wings are in our division I'm guessing there's going to be a strong contingent of Leafs fans at the Joe Louis.

He asked for $7 mil. Sens offered $4.5 mil. And they never haggled. He settled for 1 yr with Detroit, $5.5 mil ($2 mil of that in performance bonuses).

Over his career, I estimate the Sens paid Alfredsson $61 mil. It's hard to believe he left bickering over a $1 mil difference between what the Sens offered at the outset and what the Wings signed him for. But that appears to be what he did. He probably would have made up that difference in endorsement deals in Ottawa after he retired. Now, he's left a bit of a stench with his departure.

I don't think this sort of thing really affects a player's post-career earning potential. A year or two out and nobody remembers how a player left. I mean, unless you're Vince Carter or someone I think history shows fans are pretty quick to move on.

I don't think Alfie should of said all that.He agreed to the extra year in his last contract for 1 million.Believing that he would retire before the 2012-13 season.He then changed his mind and did play it.Now he wanted the Senators to compensate that by giving him two years at a pretty high buck when his skills are now diminished.He probably won't reach his performance bonuses in Detroit,so he will play for 3.5 mil....I guess it's all about playing with his buddies.

So it sounds like Alfie wanted a deal to make up for the $1mil last season, and the sens didn't go there, so Alfie got mad and signed with Detroit and is now blaming Melnyk for his departure.

I don't think Alfie will have anything to do with the sens in the future.

There's his relationship with the team which may be badly damaged and will influence whatever honours he receives going forward and there's his relationship with fans which would have a stronger influence on whatever money he might be able to make in his post-playing days which cw was referring to.

Now, I'm not listening to a ton of Ottawa talk radio and so maybe fans are reacting to Alfredsson negatively but even if that's true I tend to think that's just sort of the immediate post break-up part, you know? He didn't really leave the team badly and I find it really hard to believe that in a little while Ottawa fans would really weigh this last month or so over the 17 years he was there.

I agree and there is an endorsement cost to that (if endorsements interest players like Sundin and Alfrersson - the Poker Stars endorsement by Sundin suggests they have some interest).

It's a divisive issue that costs the player some fans.

I don't know how true that is about Sundin. He got a pretty warm reception on his homecoming and that was a few years ago at this point.

Secondly, if there's any real ugliness here...I'm not really seeing it. Everyone seems to be saying pretty nice things about each other with the exception of one comment from Murray which really seems directed more at Alfredsson's agent than anything.

Here's Alfredsson:

"I understood it's hard for them to agree to my terms, but I have my reasons," said Alfredsson. "I respect [Murray] a ton and that hasn't changed one bit."

Fan opinion, and admittedly I'm not immersed in the Ottawa fan scene, doesn't seem to be reacting too strongly and if it is, it seems torn between people blaming the Senators financial situation for everything and people who seem ok with losing Alfredsson but gaining Ryan.

So...Lebron leaving Cleveland this ain't.
