Oilers fire Eakins

On a related note here's Henrik Lundqvist basically laughing at the Oilers effort last night:

Please say Messier is taking over.

MacTavish doing dual roles or Messier please.

Confirming MacTavish returns to bench on interim basis. Replacing Eakins who was fired this morning.

It'll be interesting to see what happens to Tyler Dellow here. He was basically hired by Eakins. I don't think he actually worked with the hockey operations people. If their next coach isn't a big stats guy he could be out of a job (and a potential free agent for Dubas).

Don't think it's his fault Scrivens can't stop a puck this season.

Nope. It also wouldn't shock me if the team rebounds some under MacT - not necessarily because of him, but, because their possession numbers aren't all that bad, and things like their shooting percentage and such should come back up towards the league average as the season progresses. Both their goalies are performing well below what they have for most of their careers and their 5 on 5 shooting percentage is a pretty sad 6.5%. They're not going to suddenly become good, but they're not going to stay this bad.

With three Jack Adam trophy winners on the market right now and they go with MacTavish?

Andy Grabia @agrabia
I love the Oilers. Ex-captain becomes coach, is fired as coach, then brought back as GM. He then fires coach, and makes himself coach.

I feel like any of the quality coaches on the market right now feel like, if they wait a little while, they'll have much more interesting options available to them. Who would want to jump into the mess that is the Oilers organization right now? I wouldn't want to be anywhere near that dysfunctional front office right now.

Terrible goaltending, weak defense and no C depth?  Also known as getting "Wilson'd".

Goaltending and shooting percentage that are significantly below league averages makes them basically the anti-Leafs.

I for one would welcome Tyler Dellow to our team of analytic overlords. Does Nonis have beef with him too?

Does anyone want Eakins back for the Marlies (HC or assistant) or as an Assistant Coach for the Leafs?

Maybe. The Marlies aren't doing so well.

They'll be in tough to find a new coach. Like you said, no established coach is going to want to touch that. Bylsma definitely won't be answering his phone the next few days. But why would young and rising coaches in the AHL/juniors even want to take that job? Odd's are they'll just get Eakins'd and who knows how this stint will effect Dallas' future prospects.
