Oilers fire Eakins

I would grab Eakins back if I were Shanahan.  He got raves with the Marlies and I would have liked to see him replace Carlyle last year.  Give him a position somewhere in the org.  I think his situation is bit like Horachek's -- guy is a good coach who got his first gig in a tough situation.

It's an idea but unless he's desperate to get back into coaching immediately I don't think you'd do it until the end of the year. Eakins can relax and keep cashing Katz's paychecks and Shanahan doesn't have to answer the obvious question that bringing in Eakins raises about the future of Carlyle and/or Dineen.

You know, just to kick Edmonton while they're down:

I was googling some of the Oilers recent draft picks the other day and I came across something that has always kind of bugged me. If you see the draft pictures of Hall or Yakupov or Draisatl you see a lot of familiar faces. There's Katz and Tambellini and various front office people but there's also always Katz's son, on stage at the draft wearing an Oilers jersey. I've got nothing against the kid himself but every time I saw it as it happened it always struck me as being a pretty unprofessional thing to do in any situation but for a team that should be embarrassed about their draft position as kind of insulting to the notion of the draft. The guys on stage in the sweaters earned them. It's not a rich kid's playground. It's not like every owner brings his family up there, despite presumably loving their children and grandchildren too.

I don't know, call it a petty thing to dwell on but when the Oiler organization looks like an unprofessional mess it's hard not to think about these things. I'm not saying it contributes to what's going on there but rather that it's hard not to see it as a symptom of just how weird the priorities of the front office are.

You are right. That stage is for the kids getting drafted. They earned it. It's not a bring your billionaire kid on stage because we finished last. Make your pick and get off stage and prepare to compete so you are not in this same spot next year.

Daddy! Daddy! I want a Yakupov!
Alright, son. Fred, go get the kid a Yakupov.
But sir, I think...
Do you have a hearing problem? I said get the kid a Yakupov.
Sigh. Yes sir, right away, sir.

Daddy! Daddy! This Yakupov is broken and stinky! I want a McDavid!
Settle down son. We'll get you one.

It'll be interesting to see what happens to Tyler Dellow here. He was basically hired by Eakins. I don't think he actually worked with the hockey operations people. If their next coach isn't a big stats guy he could be out of a job (and a potential free agent for Dubas).

I for one would welcome Tyler Dellow to our team of analytic overlords.

It's sounding like Dellow's services are indeed no longer required by Edmonton, or at least so I've heard very recently.  Interesting to see if the Leafs have any interest.
