Opening Forward Lines

Paul Hendrick‏@HennyTweets?1 min
Leafs roster reduced this morning. Official details shortly. #TMLtalk

Thanks for the teaser tweet Henny.

markhmasters: Leafs assign Petri Kontiola, Sam Carrick, Petter Granberg to Marlies; Bodie on waivers

markhmasters: Rinat Valiev (knee) & Frederik Gauthier (ribs) sent back to juniors ? injuries kept both out of camp

Michael_Traikos: I was told by #Leafs mgmt that Kontiola would likely return to Russia if he was sent down to minors. Wonder if that's changed.

Carrick, Kontiola, Bodie and Granberg to the Marlies.  McLaren and Orr stick around.  Unbelievable.

Gauthier back to the QMJHL

I don't think McLaren makes it to opening night, but, it's starting to feel like Orr might.

With Bodie out, I would have to agree.

I just can't believe they're keeping Orr/McLaren over Bodie.

So Kontiola gets into 2 games and he's sent down but Orr/McLaren aren't?

So basically last cuts will probably be Leivo, Kozun, Ashton and Nylander.

Yeah. I mean, I would have been quite happy having none of them on the roster, but, if there's going to be one of them, it should be Bodie. He's at least a capable hockey player. The other two are not.

It really is amazing. Last season it seemed like whenever Bodie was in the line-up at the same time as one of those two he was playing higher in the line-up than them. But if there was only room for one on the 4th line it was Bodie sitting or going to the Marlies. It's like they think that Bodie is a better 3rd liner than Orr but Orr is a better 4th liner than Bodie.

Did you think they would keep Tim Leiweke's son-in-law on the roster?

Who do we still have on D that's healthy for the rest of camp?  Phaneuf, Gardiner, Rielly, Percy, Polak...and I guess Robidas will be back soon?

edit: Forgot about Holzer.

Ignoring the whole Orr/McLaren aspect, I really don't have a problem sending Kontiola down. His game isn't NHL ready and that wasn't turning around with 1 more preseason game. Give him a month or so to adjust to the NA game with the Marlies and see where he's at. I've read a bunch of reporters say he's like KHL bound at this point, but he doesn't have a team over there and he cited family reasons as something that led him to coming to North America in the first place, so it wasn't entirely just to play in the NHL. Also, he's on a 1-way contract so he's getting paid regardless.

So after a disastrous season last year we are starting off with:

1) Clarkson missing time (Based on my knowledge of the situation expect him to be gone a minimum of 4-6 weeks and that is including a cage...it heavily depends on what part of the orbit was actually fractured and whether there is any underlying impingement identified in followup appointments)

2) Essentially the same top 6 as last year

3) Orr and McLaren likely making the team

4) A defensive system that still seems to have players all chasing the puck and leaving half the ice wide open

5) Defensemen still using the strong side on the PP and taking away one-timer opportunities despite having two guys with really good shots.

CHANGES!

If the plan was to send him down though, wouldn't it have made sense for him to play more than 2 games and get a little more pseudo-NHL exposure rather than leaving him in practice and then demoting him?  I mean, what are you really evaluating when Orr/McLaren are in the preseason lineup?

Well I can't look at him in a vacuum without Orr/McLaren, and I don't get the point of even signing him if you're going to give him such a short look in actual games.  Even if they had sent Orr/McLaren down I'd want to see more of Kontiola.

I would not be surprised if Bodie gets pick up a capable 4th line with a cheap contract. we need to get rid of Orr and MClaren now
