Palmieri and Zajac to NYI

I?ll admit that I haven?t watched a single second of Hall this season, but I?m trying to understand how he?s worth a first round pick? 2 goals. I don?t know how you overlook that. And a decline pattern to his numbers the last few years.

Honestly, what am I missing?

Probably just putting too much emphasis on his season with the Sabres, where the entire team is a literal dumpster fire. A lot of his underlying stats blow virtually every other Buffalo player out of the water and make it very clear that the team is holding him back.

And while he obviously isn't playing at the same level as when he won the Hart last season was probably better for him than the numbers show. He scored at a 65-point pace playing with two teams that both struggled to score. With New Jersey he scored at a 68 point pace and the teams highest scorer Kyle Palmieri (who of course was just traded for a 1st rounder) scored at a 56 point pace. In Arizona he scored at a 63 point pace and the teams highest scorer was at a 52 point pace.
All good points. And there's value in salary retention.

Not that much though. Leafs retained 2.5Mill last year for a 5th round pick. So what does 4 mill get you, a 3rd, 4th or does that change, in Hall's case, the 2nd to obtaining him to a 1st?

I really don't think that first round of salary retention is going to move the needle much in terms of trade value. Buffalo literally wouldn't be able to trade him to almost any of the playoff teams without retaining a huge chunk, so that's just the price of doing business here for them. The possible second round of salary retention where a 3rd team gets involved is where the cost would be for the Leafs, but as you said it wouldn't be enormous.

Is it in the players association contract that you have to obey the hair care directives of the general manager of your team? If not, I would definitely just say no.

It would have been good for laughs if he refused to shave.  What's Lou gonna do put him on waivers?  Missed opportunity

Yes.

I know most people see this as being effectively harmless but I do think people should see this as being part of sort of a negative aspect of hockey culture. There's obviously no actual purpose here so really the only point is to establish control and enforce a conformity. If some end of bench player wanted to keep his beard he's not going to rock the boat and potentially lose his job over not being a "team player" but wanting to enforce that sort of thing still really makes me think a lot less of someone like Lamoriello.

Reminds of of when Burke started here and said no player can have a high number. Until Kessel of course. That was ok.

This is an archaic rule to conform to that serves no purpose other than to exert arbitrary control on a player.

Didn?t the Yankees have a similar kind of rule about moustaches? Didn?t Boggs have to shave when he went there?

I agree with you 100%. It's a pure power move with no clear positive objective. It's particularly harmful for a player who is traded to a Lamoriello team without their choice.

Yeah. That's where the whole Mattingly sideburns joke stems from, Steinbrenner wanted all his players to be clean shaven, short hair, etc.

"He's still better than Steinbrenner!"

Yep.  The Yankees hair rule literally came about because Steinbrenner hated hippies.  He didn?t want long hair.  I will throw the Yankees jerseys can?t have player names on the jerseys because no one is more important than the team.  What kind of nonsense is this that the players name is not worthy of being on the jersey.
