He actually used fatigue as an excuse? Maybe he shouldn't have played 3 forwards under 6 minutes against Pittsburgh. And two of them under 3:13.
 
what a crappy game. Anyone blames Reimer for the lost is wrong. Clarkson is floater and a waste of money. Why was Fraser playing tonight. That is all.

Yep.

He also blamed Gardiner/the kids for the loss and his/their bad decisions (why he was benched).  He also conceded that others made very similar mistakes tonight...and then trailed off.  But hey, bench the young kid and let the rest off the hook.

This team was sloppy and coughed up the puck alot under Wilson but they never looked this lost or had the complete inability to complete a break out 95% of the time.

They were very sloppy, couldn't make passes to save their lives and gave up unforced errors by the boatload tonight. It was just a terrible effort overall.

Phaneuf's been very good this season against arguably the toughest competition + zone starts in the entire NHL.  This bad game doesn't change that.

The team has been very bad this year with him at the helm. I'd say he's been fine, but not particularly good, though I know a lot of people would disagree with that. To me he looks slow, he gives the puck away a lot, and he doesn't always make good decisions.  I just see him as a solid defenseman who is wildly overrated in terms of the price he commands vs. what he gives you.

I personally think people have unrealistic expectations of what Phaneuf, or most D in the league, would provide if put in Phaneuf's position right now.  And it's hard to compare to other D in the league that you don't watch on a nightly basis or with the same intensity as we watch the Leafs.  I'd argue it's far from a given that if you were to put all of the other top D in the league into his position that they wouldn't have periods of struggle and see their offensive numbers impacted to some degree.

If you look (and put stock into) these stats Phaneuf has the 5th worst offensive zone start % among D in the league (meaning least in the offensive zone to start a shift from a faceoff) while facing tougher competition than anyone other than Jan Hejda on that list. 

He's being put in very tough positions.  I'm sure it's affecting his ability to perform in the offensive zone, as I'm sure the tough minutes take their toll (although his Pts/60 still stack up well).

And it's too difficult to comment on things such as his individual role in the team's success or failure.  There's been plenty of players I consider great or elite that never won anything that I wouldn't put on their shoulders.  I just personally don't know how to argue for or against that point.

I'd just like to have seen him skate back with some effort when the puck was turned over, resulting in FLA goals.  That's all.  Its like his mind was elsewhere.
 
I just re-watched the 2nd goal that got Gardiner benched a bunch of times. Gardiner was playing underneath the hashmarks where he should have been but then Kessel was knocked down which left his man on the point wide open. So Gardiner decided to rush up the ice because to cover for Kessel because he was the closest man. Kadri then let a Panther skate right past him and that guy ended up scoring the goal untouched. I'm honestly not sure I can even fault Gardiner for that goal.

I like Phaneuf, but he made much worse plays on the two goals he was on the ice for. Much worse.
 
Well, I sure picked a stinker for the one game of the season I attend live and in person. When the team finally decided to show up in the 3rd period, the game was really already over. Blech.

As I've said in other threads, if the team can't be bothered to put in an effort, neither can I. Also, there was really no energy in the crowd tonight. Doubt I would have gotten anything going. Most of the crowd sounds you heard tonight were pre-recorded.

Yeah even the boo'ing towards the end of the game seemed half-hearted. And people love to boo.

Carlyle has his favorites. Phaneuf will never get benched. I said it last night when Millen was praising Gardiner , his ice time and improved play and I said how long before he's in Carlyle's doghouse. Well 24 hours I guess. Carlyle will ruin Gardiner or he'll be shipped out of TO unfortunately.
