Phaneuf to Oilers (fair warning - it's Eklund)

Yeah, but just about everyone expected the Leafs to sign Clarkson, and had pretty much since the lockout ended. I can't give him credit for getting something like that right.

Did anyone not say the Leafs were getting Clarkson?

True enough. I'm not saying he's an 'insider', but I think he still has some friends in the business.

I was right about the Leafs getting Clarkson. Want to know my source?

About every hockey column dedicated to the beginning of the Free Agency period.

Not to say Berger doesn't have his sources, just to say that it doesn't really prove he does either.

Well, if all this stuff about Phaneuf getting traded is correct, Nonis better hit a home run on the return.

I agree.  I hope IF Phaneuf is traded it will be on July 24th with the Leafs 2014 1st pick to Nashville or something that caliber.  Weber wanted out, badly.  $77 Mil still owed in just the next 8 years.

....I know, I know....I am going to be disappointed....

If Weber wanted out badly, he would have only signed a one year deal and left as a UFA this summer. He knew there was a good chance Nashville would match Philly's offer sheet. What he wanted was to get paid - no more, no less.

Berger Bytes

From what I?m told, Leafs have discussed ? with several teams ? a trade involving Phaneuf. One year and $5.5 million remains on the Leaf captain?s contract, which carries a $6.5 million cap hit next season. Given today?s market, Phaneuf earned that money with his performance in the lockout-shortened schedule. Though many fans of the Blue and White choose to obsess over Phaneuf?s mistakes ? and he does err too much to be considered an elite defenseman ? he is certainly a front-line player at his position.

I realize this doesn't involve Phaneuf directly, but has anyone heard work on Ranger's plans for next season?  Sounds like he would be a good option, assuming he would sign an NHL contract.

With Eakins moving on, I wonder if Ranger steps to the west.

Some people speculated that he will, but everything Ranger does is shrouded with mystery so I doubt anyone knows yet.

That seems unlikely. I doubt Ranger has much of an attachment to Eakins after playing for him for all of one season, and, on top of that, his reasons for wanting to play for the Marlies were largely about wanting to be close to home and not really wanting to live the NHL lifestyle, as well as some undisclosed personal stuff. Going out west seems like it would be pretty low down on the list of things Ranger is likely to choose.

Jordan Eberle to Toronto.

Make it happen Nonis. NOW
Gardiner in return? and with?  Eklund. That's a name i haven't heard in a couple years.

Oilers would be pretty kook to deal Eberle but they are desperate enough to do something maybe they would.

Gardiner / Reimer type combination, perhaps.  Problem is taking on the $6 mil in cap hit would be tough without more going the other way too or something.

Gardiner may have to be the one on the chopping block for this one.. I don't know if they're solving their goalie issues through Toronto... So, without Reimer leaving, we may have to package a Kulemin (who can work with a Yakopov) as well as a draft pick.

For what? I mean, Eberle is a very good young player, but the wing is an area of strength for the Leafs. The assets it would cost to bring in Eberle would be better served being used to bring in a 1st line centre or another top pairing defenceman.

Exactly. We really should be looking at moves like this in terms of how the Leafs are able to allocate their cap space moving forward.

They've already got 4 wingers locked up long-term at quite a bit of $$, and they've got other positions to address. Just doesn't make sense to add Eberle.
