Phaneuf To Sens

So whose return was more disappointing/less than one would have expected -- Kessel or Phaneuf?  My vote goes to Kessel.

I wasn't really disappointed with either return really.  The Leafs got assets for both players.  Were they stellar foundations of a rebuild type of assets?  No.  However the players they were giving up weren't foundations of a franchise type of players.  I think the fact that those contracts are off the books and the Leafs are getting to the point where they have a clean slate to work with is the best part of this process.

I actually remain happiest with the Clarkson trade.  Not that we got anything for him at all, obviously.  But Clarkson was worse than useless, as a huge cap hit and a black hole on the roster for years and years to come.  At least Phaneuf and Kessel could play.  Clarkson has 1 more NHL point than Rich Clune since traded, in twice as many games.

Not having a captain is probably the best thing for this team, especially during the rebuilding phase. Someone joked about how Babcock should wear the C but that's basically what's going to happen. Instead of one player in the dressing room having to carry the weight of the team on his shoulders Babcock will end up doing most of the heavy lifting in that regard.

Well sure, but is anyone here really saying that, short of landing Stamkos, this team should possibly hold off for 3-4years until one of the youngsters shows enough skill and maturity, before naming a new captain of the Leafs? Because that would surely be breaking some new ground in the history of league.

If there's any team and management that would be far more comfortable having no captain over a mediocre captain for an indefinite amount of time, this is the team and the management.

Of the core players/prospects on the team, I feel like Rielly is probably the best suited candidate to be the Leafs next captain. I wouldn't be entirely surprised to see him with an A next season, and possibly given the C by 17/18. But you really can't predict these things. It's also entirely possible the team brings in a veteran in 17/18 and he's given the C. But I don't think it'll be 3 or 4 years before we see someone wearing the C, I would guess by 18/19 at the latest.

From @3rdPeriodSuits, a list of AHL/borderline NHLers moved out in the past calender year:

Well, that's certainly one way to effectively clear out a lot of organizational clutter/deadwood.

Teams have captains. Idk. Lol. Are you suggesting we go without one for years?

The Habs spent an entire season without one last season. I'm sure Babcock and Lou will readdress the situation this summer and during next seasons training camp, but if they don't feel like there's a suitable candidate they'll go with 3 alternates again. Naming a captain for the sake of having a captain is worse than not having one at all.

Exactly.  If you want your storied franchise to be a storied franchise, you pick somebody who is going to have a long and productive tenure with the team.
Are we a "storied franchise"? Not in my life time. A storied franchise should include winning... I am grumpy fan and get a little tired of the whole recycling of prehistoric stuff that happened in a 6 team league. Yes it matters but let's move on and realize the team needs to earn it's storied reputation because the story has been pretty ugly.

So Frattin is on "loan" from Ottawa and staying with the Marlies.

Ottawa pays his salary and has his contract spot on their reserve list, Marlies keep their player. Amazing.

Well, sure.  But my point is, part of earning that description is managing the symbolism that comes with it.

But if he's just part of the flotsam garbage in the trade, why do we want him on the Marlies?

Tobias Lindberg on a line with William Nylander and Kasperi Kapanen at #Marlies practice #Leafs

My wife gave me a serious  ::) when I said a line of Lindgren - Nylander - Lupul would be too handsome for the league.

He's still a decent AHL player. He jsut doesn't have much of an NHL future.

I was trying to find confirmation on the rules regarding that, do you know where they are?  Leafs wouldn't be paying his salary right?

I found this from 13.12 (i):

A Club may Loan Players on its Reserve List to clubs of any league affiliated
with the NHL. The names of the Players Loaned shall remain on the Reserve List of the Club.
A Loan Agreement shall be executed in the form approved by the Governors and shall contain all
the particulars thereof and shall be signed on behalf of both clubs. Such Loan Agreement shall
be filed promptly in the office of the Commissioner.

So I suppose this Loan Agreement could have the two teams hash out details like who pays his salary.

And clearing out that garbage had a lot to do with opening up spots on the reserve list, which this still does.

That's gotta be kind of weird in the dressing room.

He's a UFA at the end of the year, Ottawa likely has absolutely no intention of keeping him. So he's still a Toronto Marlie, nothing's really changed. It's almost like he's just playing on a AHL-contract now.
