R1, G1: sens @ Maple Leafs - Apr. 20th, 7:00pm - SN, Fan 590

Rielly's pizza served to Brady... come on man, not to that guy, not at that time. I am glad we don't need him 24 minutes per game this year.

23/24 playoffs averaged 24.50 minutes per game, just 18.07 minutes game 1.
Rielly served the PizzaVille GiveAway to Brady and now his promotional duties are over. No more contractually required Pizza servings from 44.

Rule 609 | Cross-Checking

(Note) Cross-checking is the action of using the shaft of the stick between the two hands to forcefully check an opponent with no portion of the stick on the ice.

(a) A minor penalty shall be assessed for cross-checking an opponent.

(b) A major plus a game misconduct penalty shall be assessed to any player who recklessly endangers an opponent as a result of cross-checking.

(c) A match penalty for reckless endangerment may also be assessed for cross-checking.

Where does a cross check to the neck and 1 cm below the chin fit in this?

Why did the PP work? Aside from Ottawa being 3-day old bologna out in the summer sun

* No fondling the puck around the perimeter until their box was set up
* No forced passes to Matthews
* Quick shots from uncontested space (the points) into slot support (Tavares, Knies, and Matthews)

Ottawa PK did a good job shutting down the entries, which is definitely a way this PP has been neutralized in the past; fortunately, the Leafs clicked off the draw.

Keefe-puck tried to leverage the Leafs skill delta with manufacturing seam plays. Relies heavily on the creativity of the puck handler, who is hopefully unpredictable, and synchronizing movements to open up seams and connecting passes in rapid succession. Looks amazing when it clicks, but is easy to shut down by committed defensive structure.

Berube-puck tries to leverage the Leafs skill delta by throwing the puck into scary ice and letting the skills and instincts sort out the chaos at the net. Relies heavily on the forwards to outman and outwork the opposing defense. Looks ugly in general and requires consistent effort throughput.

Very cheeky!
His points last night lifted him into a tie with Leafs HHoFer and past captain Syl Apps for 10th all time in Leafs playoff scoring - but he did it in 11 games less than Apps did
His playoff ppg of .91 is tied with Sundin for 4th all time (25 or more GP) (tie goes to Sundin who did it in a lower scoring era)
He got drawn and quartered by the media last summer - some media seemingly attempting to target him to sell subscriptions
He's the Leafs leading playoff scorer since he came into the league and handily playoff +/- leader among the forwards.

He's a UFA. The whole world is scrutinizing him.

What does he do under all that extra pressure?
Shows up. Leads his team with a goal and two assists.
Ho hum. Another Marner playoff game (where NHL.com named him first star).

A little cheeky but this guy is under a lot of heat and under appreciated in the wake of doing close to as much or more than anyone else in the playoffs during his time here. This was his first response in these playoffs. To me, due to his circumstances, in spite of the other Leafs who also had good games, I thought it was a notable start to his 2025 playoffs.

I think the best way to avoid the previously common-place Marner power failure in games 5-7 is to just win the series in 4.

Thank you Grieg.
I think whoever is starting games is going to get a lot of rest days. The Leafs defense style is still heavy on the goaltenders. Shots from the outside. Lots of blocks but the goalie has to be prepared to make those saves if they get through the defenders.

He looked fine after the collision.

I'm also not remotely concerned if Woll has to step in for Stolarz.

Tavares didn't get any votes in the MotM thread but he should have. Winning PP faceoffs countered the team's entry struggles and allowed them to (and him) to score.

He said in his post-game scrum that he felt no ill-effects from the collision with Grieg.

While the Leafs might feel inclined to return fire by sending Domi into Ullmark later, I think they are better served keeping Ullmark in net.
No. Playoff Ullmark isn't very good so let's leave him alone unless he flips to Hasek mode.

Good first game for the Leafs. At no point during the game was I anxious and I feel the Leafs were not as well.

Keep winning the special teams battle and they will win the series.

Yeah, that threw me off too. Besides the extra crowd noise, it didn’t really feel like a playoff game. Maybe the team’s just got the same vibe as the regular season? Guess we’ll see how it plays out as the series goes on.

Other than finishing checks on him, I think we should just ignore Grieg. He gets off on the attention.
Yup. Don't give guys like this any extra attention. Treat them just like any other player and skate away when they try to goad you into things. Drives them nuts and gets them off their game. Sure, maybe you put a little extra oomph into finishing a check on him, but that's it. No targeting, no engaging. Nothing that will fuel him.

Pontus Holmberg was driving the sens nuts by staring into the middle distance just past them every time he engaged them.
