No Matthews, not much chance.  Too bad, he had a fantastic season and made it through w/o problems ... until when it counts most.
In the longer term (such as if the Leafs manage to win this series) I agree, no Matthews no chance. But for a few games - team seems to raise its level when he is out. If Marner and Nylander can continue to get back toward 100%, there is definitely a chance in this series. Bruins just aren't that good (Swayman aside).

That said - I thought they'd play a strong game 5 and they did. Have no idea what to expect tonight. Hopefully a repeat.

They aren't that good but the reality is we aren't that good either.

Concussions can be weird though and sometimes they go undiagnosed which might have cleared him to play. We'll find out when the Leafs are out (whenever that may be)

He still wouldn't be out on the ice at all in the last couple days if it was a concussion. He'd be shut down completely until the symptoms were gone.

Good point.

Whoever makes it through will get smoked by Florida anyway.

Concussion seems like the most plausible thing I have heard -- he might not cleared for contact but could be cleared for skating during recovery from concussion-like symptoms (couldn't he?).

There is a video of him skating.  If he was sick with something like the flu, the problem would be stamina.  If that were the case, why not have him at least as the 12th forward, deployed on the power play?

I think this all started in Game 1 or 2 when I think McAvoy body slammed Matthews onto his back behind the net.

He's returned to skating too quickly for it to realistically be a concussion. As I said earlier, if that was the case, he would have been shut down completely until the symptoms were gone - no on-ice activities, period. That's the protocol. He was back on the ice within 48 hours of being pulled from the game. That screams "not a concussion" to me.

It's more likely that it started as an illness, but that it also aggravated an injury that he was otherwise able to play through - possibly his back, which has been an issue in the past. Doesn't seem like it's too severe, since he's able to skate, shoot, etc., but enough that the medical team doesn't feel he can handle the rigors of a game yet.

Game 3, but, yeah. That, combined with an illness that impacted his stomach (and everything that goes along with that), could certainly have aggravated his existing back issues.

It is weird to me that they don?t put Robertson in Matthews slot on PP1.  The guy?s shot is a weapon.  It?s not like the power play is humming and shouldn?t be changed.

Had a similar thought.

I agree 100%. His shot is all-world?the rest needs practice but at the least he?s a shooting threat and if he doesn?t rip it in the net it?ll create rebounds

Keefe said it all along is clueless. He'll use Jarnkrok before Nick. Like I said earlier in the year surprised Robertson didn't ask for a trade because of Keefe's use of him.

Kind of tantalizing seeing Matthews out there.
But under the circumstances, they must have a very good medical reason to keep him out.

Keefe had mentioned McMann was a maybe for game 1. Then that he might be back for game 5 or 6.
I see he's back skating but also not available ...

Bruins want no part of a game 7. They'll be bringing all they've got tonight.

Go Leafs Go!
