From the replay I saw, he had plenty of space to move out front of the net without hitting Lundy...  And as Carleton said, there's always the option of stopping.

You can be not skating that hard on a direct course for the goalie. Or, at the very least, be mindful that doing so comes with risks.

To me it's the old "I had to smash him into the boards from behind, I was skating super fast at him and he turned at the last second" thing. Unforeseen consequences of playing at speed are still the responsibility of the guy who ultimately commits the penalty.

Absolutely.

Gallagher, Marchand and Shaw have made careers out of making worse versions of that play, without call the majority of the time.

It's definitely been a little worse at times lately, but it's basically the ying to the yang that is 4f and 1d umbrella powerplays.

Tyler Dellow wrote a good piece for the Athletic recently that showed statistically you still come out ahead.

Hard to complain too much when it's the top unit in the league too.
 
If the Leafs don't win this one, I really hope the narrative isn't "the Leafs can't hold onto leads" or something about mental toughness but rather, you know, if you keep giving the other team a ton of great chances it will eventually result in goals.

He's always been a late bloomer, it's why the Leafs took him, like Brown he is a real pro and looks like he hasn't left the gym since last season.

I just meant tonight.

And, without reading the article, I might guess this is one of those times where I think the Analytics being right in the aggregate may not be justification for a strategy vs. a team that specifically seems designed to exploit it.

I was thinking the same thing, but, I don't see it happening. Shorter term, sure, but, unless he falls off dramatically next season, he'll still get $5M+ no problem - probably $6.5M+. He'd have to really really really want to be a Leaf to sign for the kind of deal we want.

It's more a question of term than dollars I think. If it's a one year or two year deal then with the Leafs cap situation being what it is, it's really hard to see a situation where it backfires.

Sundin was his fave growing up, so I presume he's a Leafs fan at heart.

My only misgiving was Nash is his injury history. In the last 4 seasons, he's missed 20-40 games in 3 of them. Age rarely helps in that regard.
