I don't think anyone's expecting Jones to maintain his .949 Sv% and 1.85 GAA throughout the season but continuing to out play Samsonov over the next few weeks isn't that improbable. Even Jones' numbers last season, a career worst for him, were a big improvement over what Samsonov is putting up right now. If he keeps stringing together even decent performances until Woll returns and Samsonov's game continues to show zero consistency the Leafs will be forced to make a tough decision with who to send down.

Unless there?s a major goalie injury, Jones also goes unclaimed. He?s had a nice few games, but he?s a known quantity. Based on his last few seasons, teams know there?s little to no chance of him keeping up this level of play over the long-term. He?s absolutely capable of short stretches of quality play, but that?s all anyone should count on him for.

Yup. It really feels like people forget how things have gone with goalies like this for years. No one is going to put more meaning in a handful of games than the previous five seasons. There?s a reason he was available for the Leafs to sign cheap as a third stringer and why he went unclaimed the first time on waivers. If he was a younger goalie who still had potential, he might be attractive to someone, but he?s well into his 30s.

Sure. That?s certainly a possibility, but that decision will have nothing to do with the virtually nonexistent threat of him being claimed on waivers.

I think virtually nonexistent is a little much. It really depends on what his numbers are like when it happens, and like you said it could really only take 1 goalie injury for the interest to go up even more. He might be a known quantity but goalies also get hot sometimes and another team might decide to try and ride the wave longer if the Leafs don't. It's a conversation that's tough to have until closer to when it actually might happen.

I'm not nearly as confident about "virtually nonexistent threat of him being claimed on waivers." for Jones. League minimum playing better than a bunch of backups ...

For less than 2 and a half games. NHL GMs might be the brightest bulbs, but they?re smart enough to recognize what is likely a small hot streak.

I swear, a goalie has a good week or so and people completely lose perspective on their value around the league.
 
No Matthews on my Fanduel team so he should be good for a goal at least. Going to be a tough one tonight Rangers are going to be hungry after getting beat by us last week. Heads up when Trouba is on the ice. Guy is sneaky dirty. No idea how he didn't get suspended for that slash to the head on Frederic a few games back.
 
Robertson got tired of watching the Leafs farting around in the DZ and just took over that breakout.

It is not so much on how good he is. I'm sure he's not a top flight goalie.
He's spent years establishing that.
He's maybe a little hot right now. But that isn't really key.
Seattle did win a bunch of games with him last season. He's not complete garbage.
His demeanor has been very good. Seems like a good team player.

But the key for me is: how bad some of the others have been.
Raanta who we discussed put up good numbers and won a playoff round last year ... welcome to the AHL!! There are some goalies not playing well in the league - playing worse than Jones.
With Jones contract, some of these teams have little lose to give him a try.
There's 80 or so goalies who played in the NHL this year, if he's top 60 or better ... or someone gets hurt ... might be worth giving him a shot.

He may well get through waivers like he did to start the year. But there's a reasonable risk he won't. Coaches and GMs are desperate for wins.
