Ryan O'Byrne To Toronto

Nothing against Carter Ashton, but watching O'byrne play makes me really wish we still had Keith Aulie.  Similar frame size, but Aulie had far better mobility and really excelled at separating the man from the puck.  O'byrne is painfully slow.

He's giving me Komisarek flashbacks with players driving into the zone wide on him.

I honestly think Komisarek would be a big upgrade over him.

He's terrible.

I haven't looked into it, but I'm saying the recent string of getting heavily outshot started when he came into the lineup.

But why have both he and Fraser in the lineup?  Both suck at moving the puck up the ice.  I was critical of Kostka earlier, but I'd rather see him in the lineup.

I don't think he is that bad, he is a stay at home dman, something we needed. he will be a big help in the playoffs.

He's certainly making a case for why the Avalanche were willing to let him go for nothing in return.

Missing Gunnarsson has something to do with it as well, but yeah his numbers haven't been good. In just a quick check, he's either had the lowest or second lowest corsi rating among defencemen in 4 of the 6 games he's played. And a few of those games were very bad in that regard. Against New Jersey he was on the ice for 17 more shots fired against than for.

Gunnar's injury really shows how weak the rest of the defence is. Just not enough ability back there to make plays or skating to get themselves out of trouble & buy themselves time. Gardiner looks to have the talent but is inconsistent & hasn't found his rhythm this year.

His Corsi was terrible in Colorado too.  This article, written just after the trade explains how terrible he was:

So, according to the SDI statistics, Fraser, Kostka, and O'Byrne are among the worst of the Leaf defencemen.  That trio alone explains quite a bit about the team's defensive shortcomings.  Had no idea O'Byrne was that bad.
