Scheifele and Hellebuyck sign 7-year extensions with WPG

Both contracts are too long. They?re now both under contract until they?re 38.

I'd bet there was no other way they were keeping these guys.

It's Winnipeg...I'm actually very surprised they were able to even re-sign them at all.

I mean why keep them?

They aren't a good team right now.  In 3-4 years maybe they turn it around but Hellebyuck potentially gets in the way of being bad enough to get a top pick and then when the team starts to turn it around you have a mid-30s goaltender on the decline.  Seems stupid.  They needed a hard rebuild.

I get 7 years is a long time for a 30-year old but Hellebuyck almost certainly could have gotten more than this on the open market. I don't even think $10mil was completely out of the question considering where the cap will be next summer.

Sure. The cap hit in the near term is good, but, the Jets might have been better off with a short deal at the bigger cap hit.
