Doug Gilmour went 134th overall so, using the logic here, the Leafs chances of getting a franchise player are better in the middle of the 5th round than they are at #4.

Are you trying to tell me my logic is flawed? Really?  >:(

True Fact: A player picked #4 overall is twice as likely to end up as a top 10 all-time NHL scorer than a player picked at #1.

I'll bite. What examples do you have?

If that's the case, maybe the Leafs can trade their two first-rounders for the 134th pick!

Hypothetically, if the Leafs finish 6-8, would you consider trading both first-rounders for the 4th overall to get Strome?

Nah. The Leafs are in such a hole right now that they need as many swings as they can get. If Strome were a sure fire franchise guy that'd be one thing but as is I think you just take the two picks.

It's kind of like the Kessel trade all over again in some ways.  The Leafs just aren't at the level where they need that one guy (unless it was a McDavid calibre option).  If Kessel was a better two-way forward, Lupul wasn't massive injury prone and atrocious defensively and JVR was advancing, yeah, maybe you look for that one top #1 center to pair with a very good 2C in Kadri, but right now the Leafs are likely to benefit more from the mire of picks 3-6 plus a pick in the 20s rather than banking on Strome having a better career than Marner.

Paul Kariya??

Steve Yzerman, Ron Francis

I'm pretty sure I could name as many or more number one picks though.

In the top 10, there is only Mario Lemiuex.  Here they are:

1 Wayne Gretzky  Undrafted (drafted first overall in the WHL)
2 Mark Messier    3rd round 48th overall
3 Gordie Howe   Undrafted (Signed as property of the Detroit Red Wings)
4 Ron Francis        1st round, 4th overall
5 Jaromir Jagr   1st round, 5th overall
6 Marcel Dionne  1st round, 2nd overall
7 Steve Yzerman  1st round 4th overall
8 Mario Lemieux   1st round 1st overall
9 Joe Sakic   1st round 15th overall
10 Phil Esposito      Undrafted (Signed as property of the Boston Bruins)

I'd be happy with someone like Iginla. He went 11th overall.

Wow, what a draft year (1995) that was:

http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/draft/nhl1995e.html

Bryan Berard 1st overall, Aki Berg 3rd overall, and Chad Kilger 4th.  Toronto snagged Jeff Ware with the 15th pick, who went on to play 21 NHL games and chipped in with 1 assist.  Five of the guys in the top 11 have played over 1000 NHL games.

Some people are asking if the Leafs could net a franchise player picking at number four. Looking back at the 4th overall picks over the past 10-15 years, and none of them are of the superstar variety. I'm pretty sure they need to win the lottery to get a 'franchise' type player.

Not that I really think looking at players taken in previous years draft slots means much, but Seth Jones, Ryan Johansen, Alex Pietrangelo, and Niklas Backstrom are definitely of the superstar variety. Pretty sure we've all been saying the biggest weakness of this team is a lack of a legitimate number one centre or defencemen, and any one of those 4 players would immediately fill that role.

And at pick number 5, the list includes Scott Stevens, Rob Niedermayer, Jaromir Jagr and Carey Price.  Oh, and Phil Kessel.  ;)

Phil was suppose to go first in his draft class but fell due to personality concerns.  What a surprise now his 2nd team is looking to get rid of him due to personality concerns.

As usual your opinions aren't even a nodding acquaintance with the truth. Boston didn't trade Kessel because of personality concerns, they traded him because they couldn't afford him. The Leafs, if they do trade him, won't be trading him for "personality concerns", it'll be because they're rebuilding.
