The 2012-2013 Toronto Raptors thread: My Name is Jonas

He's also having his worst shooting season of his career. He's a bit of a chucker, there's no doubt about that, but he's not a 38% shooter. Or at least, he shouldn't be.

With Wednesday's Celtics-Pacers game being cancelled (for obvious reasons), TNT will be picking up the Raptors game against Atlanta. Not sure if that will change who is carrying the game here though as the game was already scheduled for TSN2. Little bit of national exposure for the Raptors, but not the way they wanted to get it for sure.

Well, the Raptors season came to an end tonight with a win over the Celtics, ending their season at 34-48. Obviously disappointing for anyone who hoped they'd make the playoffs but considering that "making the playoffs" in this year's east required 39 wins it's not like they were miles off. A somewhat silver lining is that it means that the pick traded for Kyle Lowry that's now with OKC is probably going to be the 10th or 11th pick in the draft which isn't all that bad a price to pay.

As for the team itself...I'm optimistic about next year. I thought Valanciunas came on late and definitely looks like he can be a legitimate player. Going forward with Lowry-Derozan-Gay is not ideal but I think they can definitely be better than what they showed.

It'll definitely be interesting to see what they do going forward.

Optimistic to what level?

Being one of the 16 of 30 who make it?

I wouldn't make any specific predictions right now without knowing how things shake up in terms of player movement over the summer but it's certainly a possibility. I definitely think their core can improve going forward.

It'd be nice to get a late 1st round pick and try and draft Kabongo.  He's really raw but has the potential to be something special I think.

I'd be ok with that. NBAdraft.net has him right now actually going in the early second so it's definitely a possibility. i wonder if him being a local kid adds too much to the pressure that'd be on him but I agree that he may be a guy who you could buy low on because of the injury/NCAA troubles.

Does Colangelo walk the plank?  He has now endorsed Casey as the coach, assuming he's still the GM.

My assumption for the last 2 years is at some point Ed Stefanski was going to get the gig. The Burke/Nonis scenario only leads me to believe it's even more likely.

I think Colangelo is on his last go-round but I'd be very surprised if he got fired in the off-season. Not that it's impossible it just seems like a very strange thing for the board to do when they allowed him to tie up so much of the team's future in Rudy Gay and Rudy Gay's salary.

The Star is reporting that MLSE has hired a head-hunting firm to compile a list of possible replacements for Colangelo.

It was a head-hunting firm that found Colangelo, right? The year after he won EOY? Man, I really hope those firms don't make a lot of money.

According to NBA sources, Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment ? and new chief executive officer Tim Leiweke ? has to decide by Monday on whether to pick up Colangelo?s option year for 2013-14.

Two names being tossed around NBA circles at the league?s annual draft combine are Kevin Pritchard, currently the general manager of the Indiana Pacers and Troy Weaver, the vice-president and assistant general manager of the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Pritchard has been the general manager in Indiana since 2012, joining the Pacers from a similar position with the Portland Trail Blazers.

Weaver is in his third season as the Thunder general manager; he has been with the organization since 2008 after moving to Oklahoma City from the Utah Jazz.

...Leiweke is just doing basic business due diligence and could decide the management team already in place ? Colangelo and vice-president Ed Stefanski ? deserves at least another year on the job.

Also at stake in any decision could be the fate of head coach Dwane Casey and his entire staff.

Casey has one year left on his deal ? as does Stefanski in the front office ? but none of the assistant coaches have deals that are guaranteed past June 1.

According to reports, MLSE courting Nuggets GM Masai Ujiri, whose contract is said to expire with the Nuggets organization.  Ujiri was the first African-born GM in NBA history.

Reports: Colangelo takes corporate role, Raps look for new GM

Huh, well, colour me surprised. Still, I guess if the plan is to dump a truck full of dough in front of someone like Ujiri then it's not that bad an idea. Then again we said the same thing regarding Colangelo so who knows.

I'm pretty ok with it.  He's had 7 years to try and do something with the Raptors.  Over that time he has two playoff appearances (both first round losses) and has gone 5 years in a row without playoff basketball.

Over that time the Raptors have gone a combined:  240-318 - .430 Win%
Over that time he has had 3 coaches.

While he never has really had the luxury of going into the luxury tax, it isn't like he has been hamstrung by financial constraints and he really hasn't been able to do much with it.

The unfortunate thing for any new GM coming in is that there are a lot of bloated contracts, certainly some players with real value, but not a whole lot in the way of sound building blocks.  At least this is the year the 1st round pick goes away (and to be honest is a pretty reasonable cost for Lowry).

It makes the move for Rudy Gay seem a little strange to allow him to take on that kind of salary for a new GM to deal with.  Should be interesting down the road though heading into 2014-2015 (I'm giving 2013 a wash because of restructuring- although the team as-is could probably make 7th or 8th in the conference).

Michael Grange says the Colangelo will remain with the raptors as "President" but the new GM will report directly to Leiweke. Colangleo's role as president will include "consulting to Leiweke" on Basketball and "expanding Raptors footprint nationally" as well as more emphasis on the Raptors' relationship with Canada Basketball.

Obviously there's only so far you can go to defend those numbers but, to be fair, Colangelo's tenure here does sort of have to be divided into the two distinct phases of trying to build around/retain Chris Bosh and then trying to rebuild after Bosh left. That's not to say he did either one spectacularly well but I think it does go a ways in explaining some of the more questionable decisions he made.

I agree. They lucked out with the Lowry pick because the 12th or whatever pick in a terrible draft is a fine price to pay for a starting PG. The problem now is the Gay contract and what that locks them into going forward. It's not really that attractive a job, I don't think, for someone who could write their own ticket.
