I don't see anything wrong with the name nor why we actual need a name change.
Let's go down the list of what's wrong with the name:
1) It has nothing to do with basketball.
2) It has nothing to do with the city, or the city's basketball tradition
3) So what? Right? I mean, there aren't Tigers in Detroit, right? The name is supposed to be symbolic of the qualites the animal represents right? Well, we don't even know that much about the animal.. Despite the images popularized by the movie and resulting craze that gave the team its name, most paleontologists now believe that Velociraptors were small, around 30 pounds or so, and had feathers. The team's mascot isn't based on an actual animal that existed with actual qualities to associate with the club, it's based on some computer graphics studio's interpretation of a creature that they didn't fully understand or accurately represent.
4) It's not even the right name of the creature. A "Raptor" is a bird of prey. The Dinosaur is a Velociraptor.
5) No one had the foresight to imagine why it might be problematic to put a group of basketball players, who often engage in pretty nasty trash talk, in a bunch of bright purple uniforms and name them after dinosaurs. Raptors players have a history of being made fun of on the court by other players because of the name/uniforms.
Towers, Huskies, Hogs, St. Pat's, Bell/Rogers Employees, just about anything would be a better name.
