The 2012-2013 Toronto Raptors thread: My Name is Jonas

I like the name Raptors.  I don't see anything wrong with the name nor why we actual need a name change.  If the Raptors need a change, it's perhaps the uniforms and of course, the team itself.  A far better, improved team that will be tough to play against.  That, would suit the Raptors name just fine.

They literally pulled the name out of a hat and on the heels of a stupid movie, jumped at the opportunity to sell merchandise. The name has nothing to do with the city's or province's history, geography, or anything really. On top of that, if there's any team in need of complete re-brand, it's the Raptors. I think they know that and might as well do it now. I mean, it's not as if there are many banners hanging that would look out of place down the road.

Let's go down the list of what's wrong with the name:

1) It has nothing to do with basketball.
2) It has nothing to do with the city, or the city's basketball tradition
3) So what? Right? I mean, there aren't Tigers in Detroit, right? The name is supposed to be symbolic of the qualites the animal represents right? Well, we don't even know that much about the animal.. Despite the images popularized by the movie and resulting craze that gave the team its name, most paleontologists now believe that Velociraptors were small, around 30 pounds or so, and had feathers. The team's mascot isn't based on an actual animal that existed with actual qualities to associate with the club, it's based on some computer graphics studio's interpretation of a creature that they didn't fully understand or accurately represent.
4) It's not even the right name of the creature. A "Raptor" is a bird of prey. The Dinosaur is a Velociraptor.
5) No one had the foresight to imagine why it might be problematic to put a group of basketball players, who often engage in pretty nasty trash talk, in a bunch of bright purple uniforms and name them after dinosaurs. Raptors players have a history of being made fun of on the court by other players because of the name/uniforms.

Towers, Huskies, Hogs, St. Pat's, Bell/Rogers Employees, just about anything would be a better name.

Fine, then.  How about the Toronto Thunder (would've sounded good), the Toronto Towers, or, how about the Toronto Dumbells :)

Oh yeah, bird of prey.  A Raptor that can't play basketball.  How nice!

Perhaps if the Raptors had been a winning team and a contender, they might not have been so laughed at.

They need a team name that's at once fearsome and sexy, conveying great power, skill and speed.  Both mythical and human.  And yes, the team needs to call upon old traditions of channelling what's currently popular in the entertainment world.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you your Toronto Vampires.

Well, there is also a dinosaur called the "Utahraptor".  Anyone want to trade the 'Raptors' name (+Bargnani) for 'Jazz'?

Me neither.

No, but I'd happily trade Raptors to Utah for Jazz, flip Jazz to New Orleans for Pelicans, trade Pelicans to Los Angeles for Lakers, Lakers to Minnesota for Timberwolves and then go with Huskies and not have to worry about any over lap in the logo department.

According to wikipedia these were the names under consideration before they eventually chose Raptors:

Beavers, Bobcats, Dragons, Grizzlies, Hogs, Raptors, Scorpions, T-Rex, Tarantulas, and Terriers.

Um, wow. Horrifically awful names. Tarantulas? Really?

One, Hogs is great. Two, some people are crazy for alliteration.

Hogs eh? I get the hog-town reference but somehow I wouldn't want my team invoking the image of a pig.

My vote is for the :Toronto Millionaires.

They might not know how to play basketball but at least they are rich.  And everybody wants to be a Millionaire.

Raptors long-time scout Alvin Williams (remember him?) fired...

http://www.sportsnet.ca/basketball/nba/report-raptors-fire-scout-alvin-wlliams/

That was just insane. Best game I've watched all season. Wish the Spurs won but man...that game had everything. It's the type of game you're never going to forget. To recap:

-Duncan with 25/8 after the first half
-Miller making a 3 with no shoe
-Lebron taking over in the 4th playing basket or foul b-ball (and with no headband!)
-Parker's prayer 3
-Many Miami fans leave the stadium, Larry O'Brien Trophy wheeled out to the front of the tunnel
-Lebron's clutch 3 to bring to within a basket
-Leonard's championship-missing FT with 19 seconds left
-Allen's trademark 3 from the corner to tie it up
-Overtime
-Bosh's monster block to seal the deal
-Heat win

Emotionally drained after that game; a game sure to be considered as one of the best finals games ever. Magic Johnson, after the game ended: "one of the top two or three games I've ever seen in NBA history." Hard to argue with that.
