THE 2016 NHL DRAFT-DAY THREAD

Nik the Trik said:
Because of their relative lack of high value picks or prospects, it's pretty difficult to work out a trade with Minnesota that isn't essentially a zero-sum game.

True.  They are stuck in that zone that you don't want to get trapped in to.  That area where in order for them to improve, they have to deal something on their roster, but because of their lack of depth, then dealing something from their roster only weakens that area to improve another.  Their top 4 d-men are pretty good though.  If they are going to move something, it's gotta involve a d-man.

I don't get the "trade JVR" stuff. I don't know if it's because he'll want big $$ in 2 years
(if he does, he's likely done something to deserve that conversation...)

He's big, great hands, almost a lock to score 30 and as far as I know isn't a detriment
to the "team".

I like him a lot and we still need, you know, some pretty good players on this team.

It's almost like he's Larry Murphy on this site.

He's great to have if we're in a win-now scenario. He's hugely valuable as a trade chip in our actual rebuild scenario due to his performance:cost.

I don't think it's a question of people hating him but the opposite, we know he's a great player and on a sweetheart contract right now.  You'd probably be able to do really well in a trade with him.  He'll be 29 the next time he signs a contract, and at that age are you prepared to hand over big cash for 8 years?  Probably not.  It's a sad reality of the new cap NHL that you need constant turn-over of the roster to keep your core age of players in the 25-28 range.

It's not like that at all. This team is still at the beginning stage of the rebuild and that stage needs picks and prospects. JvR is a valuable asset that can garner a good return. It's really that simple.

No, for me it's because he's likely an attractive option now for another team needing scoring, especially if they have excess dmen or picks for sale ( to a lesser degree ). That's the fit, because he's good. If they can't get a younger solid dman ( preferably RD ) with upside then they probably keep him.

I don't get people who act like the cap doesn't exist and who think other teams will trade us good things for bad players.

I love JVR as a player. In fact, he's one of my favorites. That being said, he's the Leafs' biggest trade chip and the time is nigh for cashing him in.

That was great! Thanks for that Zee... Babs inna HOUSE!

CGY working to get a goalie. Have had talks with TB on Bishop and with STL on Elliott. CGY has permission to talk to Bishop about extension.

Acquisition and contract costs higher on Bishop than Elliott obviously. Elliott may be more affordable. In any case, the hunt continues.

Flames look like they're going big-name hunting this weekend for a goalie. Poor Reimer.

Think I may stay up for this afterall. Are any radio stations covering the draft? I've not had any luck with tv streams in past years so going to try to catch it using the TuneIn app on my phone.

The following link is working for the preview show, if it doesn't also have the draft I'll post another one for you, just in case you want to watch.
