The Official Movie Thread

Well, pretty neat that in a year with big, well received movies from directors like Tarantino and Scorcese and big crowd pleasers of the sort that usually win over the academy they instead decided to go with the foreign language satire on modern capitalism as Best Picture.

Sure, I'd prefer it if things were actually being done politically about the horrible financial inequality that is tearing society apart as opposed to just celebrating movies about it but...gotta start somewhere.

So has anyone watched Parasite? Any thoughts on it by anyone here?

It's hard for me to say if it "deserved" Best Picture since I've only seen two other nominees (Jojo and Joker) and all of this is obviously subjective but I will say I think the hype is mostly legit. It's a movie where even if you're not into the story for whatever reason it's almost impossible I think to come out of it not at least thinking it was still a very well made/put together film.

It's also making all the right people very angry, so that's always a bonus to me these days.

Sorry, I didn't make it clear that I'd seen it. I think it's absolutely a deserving winner of the award as a movie that's really about something relevant at a time when a lot of Hollywood, despite the posturing of award show speeches, seem to want to make movies about the past(1917, OUATIH, Jojo Rabbit,  Joker, Little Women, The Irishman and Ford vs Ferrari. The only other nominee set in the present was Marriage Story) and avoid controversy. It's innovative and well put together and has some really great performances.

That said if you're the sort of person who really wants their "Best Pictures" to be rewatchable tradtionally made stuff...eh. I don't know if I liked it more than Tarantino's movie in that sense but I think it's probably a bigger achievement.

How about Marriage Story? I saw an honest trailer jokingly refer to it as Kramer v. Kramer lol.

I've never seen Kramer vs. Kramer so I don't know if the comparison works but I think it's a lot like all of Baumbach's movies. If you have a high tolerance for getting in depth with the troubles and issues faced by upper class artistic types then it has good writing and performances. The downside is it felt genuinely at times like being on the inside of a collapsing marriage which, again, strains the definition of being traditionally entertaining.

I?ve been wanting to see Parasite

Kramer vs Kramer was the biggest cop out ending in the history of cinema, a great movie up to the very end and then ruined by an unbelievable ending. Without ruining it to much for those who have not seen it.  The last shot in the movie should have been tears running down Dustin Hoffmans face as he looks out the window and see's his son and Meryl Streep walking away.  What BS.
I haven't seen Parasite but am now eager to do so.
Without seeing it hard to comment, but the Oscars used to have best Foreign Language Awards for foreign language films, and we have now had two best picture Nominees, one a winner in Parasite, the other was Roma which I don't think won.  Ce la Vie as 1917 did win best cinematography which it so certainly deserved.

They still do. Parasite won that as well.

Good for that, but I don't believe they were accepted in the Best Picture category before a few years ago when they opened it up.  Can you imagine some of Truffaut's and Fellini's films accepted, Sajat Ray from India, Kurasawa from Japan. All genius film makers.

There was never any actual rule about foreign language films being considered for best picture it's just rare. But prior to Roma movies like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Life Is Beautiful were Best Picture nominees along with a few others over the years.

Tru Dat Nik and thanks for the heads up ;  Life is Beautiful won three Academy Awards (including Best Foreign Language Film and Best Actor for Benigni). It was also nominated for Best Picture.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon has won over 40 awards, and was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won Best Foreign Language Film, Best Art Direction, Best Original Score and Best Cinematography,[5] receiving the most nominations ever for a non-English language film at the time, until 2018's Roma tied this record.

Interesting research:  Even though a separate prize has existed for foreign language films since the 1956 Academy Awards, such films continue to be eligible for Academy Awards in other categories, including Best Picture, provided that they have been commercially released in Los Angeles County and that they comply with the special rules governing those categories.

I've heard good things but never watched one. Is there a good starting point?

I've only seen a few but here's a Looper rundown:
Studio Ghibli Movies Ranked Worst To Best but ignore the ranking aspect.
Tales from Earthsea | 0:16
My Neighbors the Yamadas | 1:00
From Up on Poppy Hill | 1:35
Porco Rosso | 2:45
The Wind Rises | 3:34
Pom Poko | 4:26
Ponyo | 5:07
The Cat Returns | 5:47
When Marnie Was There | 6:36
Howl's Moving Castle | 7:31
Nausica? of the Valley of the Wind | 8:24
Whisper of the Heart | 9:28
Ocean Waves | 10:13
My Neighbor Totoro | 11:04
Castle in the Sky | 11:45
The Secret World of Arrietty | 12:29
Princess Mononoke | 13:27
Kiki's Delivery Service | 14:07
Only Yesterday | 14:53
The Tale of the Princess Kaguya | 15:55
Spirited Away | 16:33
Grave of the Fireflies | 17:16

Grave of the Fireflies is not available, but that one will make you cry (there's some deep post-WWII contemplation and just sadness followed by more sadness). Spirited Away is probably the most well-known in North America, so I'd start there. My Neighbor Totoro is cute and has a fun conspiracy theory fans have linked to it. Princess Mononoke is Japanese mythology inspired if that's of interest; I haven't seen this one yet, but it'll be my first stop.

Chadwick Boseman passed away from colon cancer.  I guess he had been fighting it for a while and kept it pretty quiet.

He starred in a number of roles playing Jackie Robinson, Thirgood Marshall and James Brown.  He was also part of the Marvel franchise as the Black Panther.

I recently watched the birds of prey movie, I had no expectations, and, it?s not that great of a movie. If you enjoy the ridiculous than this movie is for you.

However, I?m a Ewan McGregor fan, and appreciate his acting skills, but when is he going to learn that he cannot pull off an American accent.

Just saw the first trailer for the new version of "Dune".  It looks great and like this epic is finally being told by someone who captures the essence of the book.
