The Official NBA/Basketball Thread

Cleveland  112  Golden State  97.  Warriors lead series 3 games to 2.

No Draymond Green?  For the Cavaliers, that spelled opportunity.  For the Warriors, that spelled disaster.
And so it was, that Green's suspension (for incuring his fourth flagrant foul in Game 4),  was just the tonic LeBron James & his Cleveland Cavs needed to cement a well-earned victory.

Not having Green in the lineup may not sound or seem like a big deal.  He's  only one player on a Golden State team that is too good to let his absense stand ant.  To LeBron James and Kyrie Irving, it meant more freedom on the court cutting through the Warriors' defence.

So they did.  James and Irving played their way into the NBA record books as being the first teammates to both score 40+ points in a playoff (Finals) game.

While James and Irving and co., were doing their thing, the Warriors - - Curry, Thompson, et al., were hitting mostly rims and throwing air balls.  This from a team well-known for their accuracy skills.  It sure got ugly at times.
The Warriors hope having Green back for Game 6 will change that,

Game 6 goes Thursday in Cleveland.

What on earth were the Cavs wearing last night?

A little while ago the NBA made the very smart decision to push towards tight jerseys with sleeves because they were under the sensible impression that their fans tend to be in roughly as good shape as their players and that T-Shirts work in all occasions.

Cleveland  115  Golden State  101.  Series tied 3 games to 3.

Who could have predicted this.  That the Cleveland Cavaliers became the third team in NBA history to come from behind a 3 games to 1 deficit in the Finals and force a Game 7

Thanks to Cavs leader LeBron James who garnered his second straight 40+ point performance, and the rest of his teammates, who, well, simply played brilliant as a team.  James seemed virtually unstoppable, with contributions from Irving, Smith, and Toronto-born Tristan Thompson with another strong game (18 pts., 10 rebounds).

While the Warriors looked like a disheveled bunch in the early start, with Draymond Green back in the lineup after serving a suspension, and Andre Bogut out with an injury, Golden State eventually found it's groove mostly with Curry & Klay Thomoson doing their stuff.  But without much help from the rest of their teammates, and Steph Curry incurring foul trouble, not much indeed did go right for the Warriors.

Curry's frustrations mounted after fouling out late in the fourth quarter, so much so, that he threw his mouthpiece at some Cleveland fan (after much taunting).  Warriors coach Steve Kerr wasn't at all impressed with Curry being handed six fouls, three of which were questionnable:

"He gets six fouls called on him, three of them were absolutely ridiculous," Kerr said. "As the MVP of the league, we're talking about these touch fouls in the NBA Finals. I'm happy he threw his mouthpiece."

Whatever.

Cleveland Cavs can make history Sunday should they win in Game 7.  They will become the only team in the Finals  to complete their accomplishments.  As for Golden State should they lose...

Game 7 is slated for Sunday in Oakland.

Cleveland  93  Golden State  89.    Cavaliers win series 4 games to 3.

Congratulations Cleveland Cavaliers!  NBA ohampions!!

And to LeBron James on being named MVP!

Both the Cavs and the Warriors made history - - Cleveland, on being the first-ever NBA squad to come- from-behind a 3 games to 1 series deficit to win the championship,  and Golden State, on  becoming the first -ever NBA squad to squander a 3 games to l series lead enroute to losing the championship.

Call it a tale of two teams, but in the end none of this would have been possible for the winning team, if not for LeBron James and his incredible performance, in bringing the Cavs from the brink of elimination to the thrill of winning it all.  'King' James' value to the Cavs was as worthy as the trophy crowning him MVP.

James' promise to bring Cleveland a championship echoed through in the Finals, a promise he had made two summers ago when he signed on as a Cavalier, and continuing through in the playoffs.

Wow, what a comeback!

I was turned off the first two games of the series the way that Cleveland got blown out.To see them win is rather unbelievable from a three one deficit to win it all, just unbelievable.

Lebron becomes the first player to ever finish a Finals leading both teams in points, rebounds, assists, blocks and steals.

Did Connor McDavid have to be drafted by the Leafs for him to one day be our LeBron, bringing the championship home?

I only watched the last 4 minutes - the way James reacted after that fall, I thought he had broken his wrist. I mean that was some oscar calibre acting right there.

But that aside, that block was ridiculous.

Derozan re-signs with the Raptors 5 years 139M (27.5M/year).

The Raptors have no cap space.  Biyombo is gone.  They can still sign guys to the MLE so hopefully they find a shooter.

Don't that they have Bird rights on Biyombo? That would let them go over the cap to resign him if they wanted.

Nope.  They will have them for Lowry when he opts out of his deal but Biyombo was only with the team for the one year and they don't get Bird Rights for him.

That's big, crazy so, but that's just the reality of the expanding cap. Happy to see DeMar back, even if that's sentimentality overriding good judgment.

There certainly is something to be said for Derozan being the first true UFA player to sign back with the team.    The number does seem absurd but it projects closer to an 18-20 million dollar contract pre-cap increase.

Yeah. Seeing that Noah might sign for 18 million a year makes it a little easier to take. Also, I saw someone crunch the numbers and say that with the cap where it is, the rosters where they are and 240 minutes to distribute on a team, an average player playing 30 minutes a night should make 13 million so...you know.

It's still a lot of freakin' money.

Chandler Parsons is getting a max deal from the Grizzlies.

DeRozan looks downright reasonable.
