The Official TV Thread

I gave it a go. It's funny how despite the fact that Luke Cage and Iron Fist are so joined at the hip in the comic universe the premise of Luke Cage felt almost satirically relevant to modern day issues while Iron Fist feels like he's entirely anachronistic.

Even then though the issues some people have with the character itself didn't bother me too much, it just had all of the structural and pacing flaws the other Marvel shows did without any of the hooks they did that kept me watching. It was just criminally boring.

But from the "You should watch this" category Amazon Streaming has the first season of Fleabag and that's something I'd recommend highly.

This is back.

I'm working through Iron Fist (at Ep 9). Not quite the same narrative structure as previous Netflix Marvel shows have been, but very similar beats. The back half has been a lot more compelling than the first six episodes, which is a bit of a reversal for this series as well.

Early reviews take a big dump on Finn Jones for a) being Danny Bland; b) surprisingly weaksauce fighting; c) not doing anything to overcome the inherent Asian appropriation/white saviour issues with the story. For the most part, this is accurate so far. It's the Matt Martin of the Netflix Marvel lineup.

The (probably sole) redeeming quality that prevents this show from being unwatchable: Jessica Henwick's portrayal of Colleen Wing.

So apparently this show is quite self-aware:

I just finished watching the first season of the Israeli show Fauda(it's on Netflix) and I have to say I was legitimately impressed. I don't entirely know what I'd compare it to, it's about an Israeli special forces unit, but sort of 24 by way of The Wire? Only if 24 didn't come across as insane and gimmicky.

It was also fairly apolitical which was a surprise. I suppose that's in and of itself a political thing but it wasn't too concerned with the rights and the wrongs of things as opposed to just being a good yarn about one side vs. the other.

GLOW on Netflix: I (really) liked it.

As someone who nothings pro wrestling and is not particularly nostalgic about the 80's vibe, GLOW's take on the cultural climate, the wrestling zeitgeist, reverse-reverse(-reverse?) social commentary, and depth of genuine relationships amidst the deliberate schlock of exploitation and stereotypes was amazing.

I agree, I really liked it. I'm not sure the actual setting added much to the proceedings but it was really sharply written and had some really great performances.

Marc Maron was great in it

In other Sunday TV news, Rick and Morty is just killing it.

"What more do you want tacked onto this? I turned myself into a pickle and 9/11 was an inside job?"

"I'm Pickle Rick!!" I really liked that Mad Max episode. This season seems a bit darker than the others so far (then again the Purge episode was pretty dark)

I can't believe they actually made Pickle Rick work, and well.

Love this show so much.

I know and I find it hard to express why I like it. I think the humour just works for me.

Guys I'm really beginning to worry that now that Game of Thrones is gone we're not going to have quite as robust an after-episode discussion about David Simon's gritty new period drama about the failure of government institutions.

Hockey's starting soon we won't have to talk about anything else then.

But the institutions! They're failing! Leading to a wide range of problems for a diverse group of street-level characters!

So, you don't think we'll openly dissect a series about the early days of the porn industry? I mean, I don't know about you, but . . .

What the deuce is everyone talking about?

Speaking of which, are we going to touch on that Ted Cruz thing, or nah?

Some truly excellent choices at the Emmy Awards tonight. Riz Ahmed, Elizabeth Moss finally winning, John Lithgow, Donald Glover winning twice, Lena Waithe but maybe most of all it was great to see Charlie Brooker win 2 for San Junipero.

Nice to see Canadian author Margaret Atwood with the cast & crew of "The Handmaid's Tale" on stage, when it too the Emmy for Best Drama Series.

Too bad for Game of Thrones fans.  The series did not make the eligibility list for this year's Emmy Awards.

Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, Alexander Skarsg?rd, and Jean-Marc Vallee took home the hardware for "Big Little Lies".

Biggest surprise of the night that left some in the audience gasping....host Stephen Colbert's introduction of Sean Spicer in a cameo appearance.
