The Official TV Thread

Admittedly I'm not an expert in the genre but it sure feels like every show that's tried to cash in as the "Next Game of Thrones" seems to think people watched GoT because it had dragons and ice monsters and CGI armies and not because it had sex and violence and double-crosses and really solid actors giving good performances. Succession feels like it has way more to do with Game of Thrones than any of these sword and sorcery ones do.

I watched the first two episodes of Wheel in Time yesterday. It was entertaining. Not mind blowing, but my daughter and I enjoyed it. I'll continue watching.

Could probably have put this in music or movie thread, but here we are?

Get Back, The Beatles documentary

Have to say, I was cynical about the run time when it went from a movie to an 8 hour epic.

But I?m about 6 hours in and I don?t want it to end. Absolutely fascinating stuff on so many levels and I think I?m going to read up and refresh a bit on some of the background things that had been going on then watch again and I suspect I?ll pick up loads I?ve missed this time through.

The process they have for writing and making their songs is a little snapshot into some actual genius at work.

So I'm late to the party but I got sucked into Ted Lasso. I was kind of resisting it for a while as I'm always king of skeptical of tv shows that get suddenly popular, but it's nice to have a fun, interesting and well written show that's just straightforward. You know in some ways beforehand a lot of it is going to somehow work out for Ted (although not always) but sometimes you need that kind of sweet show considering how cynical and depressing most TV is these days.

Also, as an aside, I watched through White Lotus and besides it being well shot and well acted, I really didn't see a point to watching. I've heard a lot of defense of the show and I'm just not convinced... I really didn't think it was very good beyond the initial hook in which I thought was kind of a cheap device to get you to watch.

I liked White Lotus a lot but I don't think it's for everyone. I don't think the message was especially profound maybe but I think it was making the point it did in a clever way.

In what sense was it clever, and just so we're on the same page, what point do you think it was making?

So it's been a while since I watched it but obviously it's about the relationship between the privileged and the less privileged and how they interact in the most direct sense in the most modern version of the aristocracy/servant relationship we're likely to get.

And I guess what I thought was clever was that they set up all of these scenarios where we might see people realize the grossness/excesses of that relationship and "learn a lesson", whether it's the newlywed feeling constricted by the upper class life she has planned out for her and the class she's joining or the friend of the daughter seeing how the daughter didn't think she was really her equal or even Jennifer Coolidge's character sort of being used for emotional validation by the guy she hooks up with in the same way she was using the spa manager, and in the end all of them retreat to the safety and security of their established social hierarchies as soon as they really see what being outside of them might entail. Nobody grows or changes when face to face with the inequities of our modern caste system and nobody receives a comeuppance for being a terrible person.

So, again, I don't think there was anything groundbreaking in the message but I do think that there was a sharpness in the characters that very much drove home the ideas here.

Finished watching "The Wheel of Time" with my daughter last night. There's some instances that I felt were overdone, and some others that were poorly written, but overall, it was a fun watch.

I'm a big fan of the books and am half way through the show. I've found it ok so far, they've definitely tried to make it more gritty than the source material. The biggest issue I've had though is that none of the characters seem very likable.

That's definitely an issue the show is going to have to deal with. All the main characters (outside of maybe Egwene) come across so gruff and unfriendly.

WoT seemed like it didn?t have enough time to unfold some stories. Too rushed on plot and not enough character building (hence, mostly unlikeable). Only likeable characters might have been Lan and Egwene who have a range of emotion and motivation beyond surly and bland.

In the books Perrin is supposed to be like a friendly giant, Mat is like Merry and Pippin were at the beginning of LoTR and Rand is more of a friendly boy next door type. I don't know why they aged the characters up to 20, that didn't help at all.

I've only seen one episode with Thom and I'm hoping he's better than the others. He was one of the best characters in the books.

After Life.

OMG. Ricky Gervais is a genius. We saw the first two seasons at my son's behest (he loves RG) and it was just captivating. The final season dropped Friday and we watched straight through and then watched all 18 episodes again. It's absolutely wonderful-an honest look at grief and going through the stages.

And the dog of course. The dog just makes it for us.

I loved the Office and Extras but Season 1 of Afterlife just fell flat with me for whatever reason. My gf loves Derek though!
