Thomas Vanek traded to NYI

BREAKING: #Isles have traded Matt Moulson, their 2014 1st-round pick and a 2015 2nd-round pick to Buffalo for Thomas Vanek.

That strikes me as an overpayment for the Islanders.  Both are UFA at the end of the season.

So, Buffalo is giving up on their season already, huh?

Vanek and Tavares together is going to be interesting.

Stats and age wise, imo vanek for moulson straight up would have been fair. I think buffalo made out like bandits here.

I disagree. Vanek is much more talented than Moulson. He can do a lot on his own, whereas I'm not convinced Moulson will be able to contribute much without a Tavares calibre player feeding him the puck.

That much better though?

EDIT: But Tavares + Vanek should be good.

A mid round 1st and a 2nd? Yeah. That much better. Vanek's a legit 1st line winger, regardless of who he's playing with. I'm not convinced you can say the same of Moulson, who strikes me as someone who's been on the receiving end of the Jonas Hoglund effect.

I just don't get it from the Islanders perspective. They don't improve near enough to warrant giving up those picks. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if Moulson out does Vanek rest of season.

Is there not rumours of Vanek heading to Minnesota to play with Pominville after this season though? Am I thinking of someone else?

On an expiring contract?  I don't think potentially 70-odd games of Vanek is worth that.  The Sabres weren't going to re-sign him anyways, and while I'm sure the Isles think they can sign him it's still a risk that they don't, and they still only marginally improve I think - their issues remain in net.

No doubt he is benefiting from Tavares, but isn't that a little unfair of a guy with 3 straight 30+ goal seasons, a 4th season on pace for 26 goals but 78 points and again being on pace for another 30 goal season this year.

Hoglund's aren't capable of that kind of consistency.  Vanek is a much better player though.

I would be absolutely stunned. Vanek will almost certainly be playing alongside Tavares, while Moulson now joins the least productive offence in the NHL. He'll have no help there, whereas Vanek gets to play with one of the better centres in the NHL.

Well, Moulson's also an expiring contract, and, obviously the Islanders feel they have a shot at retaining him after this season. If this move helps to guarantee them a playoff spot, then it's absolutely worth it for them.

This trade surprises me.  Moulson & Tavares were magical.  Yes, Moulson feeds off the passes, but then, have the Islander forgotten their history?!

By that I mean, there used to be Bossy/Trottier, where Bossy the pure scorer fed off passes by Trottier.  The two went together very well on the ice.  Same here for MouIson/Tavares.

I don't get you, Garth Snow!!!

He's probably a ~20 goal, ~50 point guy without a Tavares type to run with, though. He's more talented than the average Hoglund type, but, that also means he's going to be able to take advantage of being his team's Hoglund better. His production numbers are almost certainly going to take a serious hit having to play the rest of the season with the lack of talent in Buffalo.

Didn't the Islanders make the playoff this past season with the Moulson/Tavares tandem?  An affirmative yes.

I see the point.  Perhaps they feel Vanek can provide the same or greater input and same for Buffalo with Moulson.

They just barely squeaked in, yes, and they're just barely on the inside of the bubble right now. They've also lost their 3rd and 5th leading scorers from last season, which included their #1 defenceman. There was a very good chance they weren't making the playoffs before this deal, but, now, I think the odds are that they squeak in again.

I doubt there's more than 10 points and more than 5 goals difference between the two rest of season. Moreover, I'm curious what that means for the Islanders win/loss column going forward. Personally, I suspect very little. Like I said, I think Snow by in large gifted those picks to Buffalo.

Huge price to pay if Vanek bolts at the end of the season.

Sure is. The only way this makes any kind of sense is if they knew Moulson wasn't coming back and they feel they have a good chance of getting Vanek locked up. Even still, eww.
