I could be wrong, but I?d be very surprised to see him settling for a 5 year deal. If Calgary can get him for that term, then sure, that changes everything. I expect he?s looking for a big, long contract.

I have to imagine he's smart enough to recognize it's unlikely he gets a 7 or 8 year deal (not impossible, but I definitely wouldn't put money on it). If Calgary offers him good value for 5 or 6 years, I think he'll take it. Probably ends up with similar real dollars, too, as any contract he'd sign would have cheaper seasons tacked on to the end.

That's a scary contract.

He'll be 30 when the contract starts, I'm sure he'll continue to improve all the way to 38!

A finesse playmaker that doesn't rely on speed is probably the best bet to age more gracefully north of 30.

4 straight point-a-game seasons. Not sure how much he needs to improve...

Last couple years of the contract could be rough, though.

He can still shred on the PP if he is complemented with the right system and shooters.

4 straight (on pace) 90+ point seasons, 4th in league scoring over those 4 seasons. Gaudreau got $9.75mil x 7 (and reportedly turned down at least 1 higher offer) and he was 10th in scoring the past 4 seasons combined and much less consistent (scored at just a 67 and and 71 point pace the two seasons prior to this last one). Granted Gaudreau was 2 years younger than Huberdeau will be once this contract kicks in but there's still good reasons for Huberdeau to get more than Johnny did.

Yeah maybe down the line it's not as good of a deal but that's kinda standard practice for big UFA deals.

This was the one thing I was a little surprised about.

Tkachuk's deal will have only expired the off-season before Huberdeau's. Willis needs to check his facts (or, at least, make sure he's referencing the right Tkachuk).

No, he?s literally saying ?at age 35?. Meaning when Huberdeau is 35 vs. when Tkachuk is 35.

The contract is a bit much in terms of length but I got to give credit to Calgary for recovering from a disastrous off season.

This may make him easier to trade. In your seven, after the signing bonus, he is due relatively little and is it team that does not care about reaching the can take him on more easily.

From Huberdeau?s side, if I?m remembering, Shenanigans like this make him buyout-proof.
