Trade deadline moves

Today?

I certainly wouldn't bet on him moving today, or the Leafs doing anything of significance today really, but it wouldn't stun me or anything.

Someone is getting moved. Hold me guys
I don't know if it's a move to make him eligible for the playoffs. Not sure about the rule.

I think the Leafs move was Muzzin so I'm not expecting anything big.

He's on a NHL contract at the start of the season.  He could play the entire time in the AHL this season and still be Playoff eligible for the Leafs.

On the other hand, they are saying "will be called up"... I'm assuming that he will be called up at 3:01 pm.  He needs to be on the Marlies roster at 3pm today to qualify for the Marlies playoffs.

Thanks for the clarification! I heard the Marlies were calling a few guys up from their ECHL team also.

If it's to get a good young top-4 D I honestly don't know why people would be upset. I mean I do, but I don't.

Yeah, I mean I like Kapanen and Johnsson a lot but if we get a better defense out of them, it's probably more valuable to the team.  We have enough forward depth with Tavares/Matthews/Marner/Kadri/Johnsson(or Kapanen)/Nylander/Hyman that you could absorb the loss of one winger but giving an extra minute or so to each of those guys and really minimally affect the talent level out on the ice each game.

I wouldn't read too much into Moore being called up in regards to any potential moves. It was always sorta assumed he'd be up once the rosters expanded, and he's an instant upgrade over literally any of the current players on the 4th line (Ennis, Lindholm, Gauthier). So basically don't assume this is directly related to Brown or someone being traded.

They are allowed to exceed the 23 man roster after the deadine so no one has to be waived to bring him up. The probably just want him to play for the Leafs.

And they haven't done it offiicially because they need to wait in order to have him eligilble for the AHL playoffs too. That's probably all it is.

I sort of agree but I think that the fact that Muzzin hasn't really addressed the L/R divide and maybe hasn't led to a run where the Leafs look massively improved might make Dubas want to do a little more rearranging.

I'm assuming one of Johnsson, Kapanen, or Kadri is gone this summer, if not at the trade deadline.

To my mind Tavares coming here changed things dramatically. I don't think the team is going to pay Nylander 7 million a year to centre the 3rd line so realistically he and Marner are the 1 and 1a RW. So not only does paying Kapanen a ton of money in that #3 spot not make a ton of sense, you do kind of have to ask if at some point you need someone who maybe adds more size or a physical presence somewhere and that seems to be a natural spot.

Looking at the Buffalo/Anaheim deal yesterday. Always talk of the leafs interest in Montour even before the Muzzin deal.
Think he would have been an excellent pickup. Was surprised at what Buffalo gave up thought he would fetch more.
Thoughts?

I really don't get the Montour interest. His stats make me think he's just what we all hoped Connor Carrick would be. Good puck mover but not really that great in his own end. He'd probably get eaten alive with this fan base.

From what I've heard, Montour is a Jake Gardiner type D man, meaning he is a high risk/reward guy, so he may not have fit into what kind of D the Leafs need(ed). There was also no indication that he was available when Dubas got Muzz. The Ducks were still in a playoff spot back then I think.

I agree with that. That's the main reason I see Kadri as the least likely to go. On the other hand, he's the most valuable of the three and would be attractive to lots of teams.

I think Johnsson -- as much as I like him -- is the easiest to replace. I think Moore is that replacement. Things could change if they manage to trade Marleau (or retirement.)

Disagree with that. Johnsson is our best left winger and Moore isn't there yet. He may never be as good. We are weak on the left side...Hyman, Brown, Marleau. If we're trading a left winger, it would be both Hyman and Brown going for me. Use their money to help sign both Kappy and Johnsson. We all know Marleau isn't getting traded.

Man, not much going on today.

Lot of the bigger moves were already made, so, yeah, slow. However, we're getting to about the time of the day when things usually start to pick up some.

Cliff Pu was someone the Leafs maybe could have used. He's not having a good start to his pro career but size on the wing and good junior scoring numbers could have been a worthwhile roll of the dice.
