Training Camp Thread - Currently with Marner now

Subban or Sparks will be on waivers  :)

If Neuvirth makes the team  I expect Hutchinson to be claimed
by someone else....

There are a lot of unknown ( to me ) backups pencilled in
at this point

A little while ago I actually looked at the goalies who will potentially see themselves on waivers soon. None of them really stood out.

That's why Dubas' carefully put together analytics department has invented the Goalie-Analyzer 3000. Feed all of the data for the available goalies into it and it will give us the name of the perfect affordable back-up to solve all the team's woes...

I can envision a step (or two) back this year, depending on how they handle Hyman and Dermott's long-term absence.  I still think they'll make the playoffs, but it could be more of a struggle.

I think the key, which nobody is really talking about, is the b/u goaltender.  I have my doubts that either Hutchinson or Neuvirth can deliver the 20+ games somebody other than Andersen is going to need to start.  We've tried the not-quite-rested-enough Freddie in the playoffs more than once now, and that version didn't come through when we needed it most.

There will be a goaltender available on waivers - I believe we'll make the pickup this year if one we like comes available.
Lets get Sparky back ;)

Anton Forsberg from Carolina, IIRC, was pretty much the best bet there. He might be an improvement over what we've got but that's only if both our back-up candidates have bad camps.

Louis Domingue was actually the guy who might be the most interesting goalie to go on waivers in the next few weeks. I didn't remember him originally because when I was looking at this before I sorta assumed Tampa would have traded him by now. One problem here is that we've probably only earmarked around $700k for the back-up goalie and he's a bit above that ($1.15mil).

Would you really characterize Hyman Dermott being out until November/December as long term absences? By all accounts at minimum Dermott is ahead of schedule.

Babcock said today they're still expecting him to miss 12-14 games. The Leafs have 14 games in October.

Which is would say is not really "long term".... but I guess everyone has their own definitions.

We'll be able to afford LD after Dubas cleverly fails to sign Marner to a 20-year contract pegged to Canada's Gross Domestic Product, plus the mayoralty of Toronto, a plaque naming him a VIP, and a maraschino cherry.

With all of the changes, the emphasis seems to be more or less on speed and skill and creativity. Has the identity of this team changed? Does it affect your process?

Babcock: Every year it is totally different. You?ve got 23 guys and 23 different ways to coach. Cap wise, we might have 20 guys eventually. You?ve got to look at it different. The players are all different and you?ve got to handle them different. Once you?ve got new guys, they?re going to learn you and you?re going to learn them. You?ve got to figure out the process to handle it.

I don?t think, to be honest, what we are looking for has changed. You can?t change it instantly. It takes time to get your team to be the position you want it to be in. Let?s be honest ? we are a good, good team in the NHL. It has taken us some time to get here, but now we are a team that we feel has an opportunity each and every year. We didn?t have an opportunity in the past.

When we made the playoffs my second year here, we didn?t have an opportunity. Now we are getting to a point where you earn the right. You get slapped around a little bit. All of those little slappings help you grow. All you?ve got to do is look at the teams that win. They?ve been slapped previously.

What up.

Also, what is it with Hockey people and slapping?

What do you think a change of scenery will do for Cody Ceci and what are you looking for from him specifically?

Babcock: That?s a great question right there. We believe that he is just scratching the surface. We think the same about Barrie. We think there is growth potential there for sure. I think sometimes just the change of scenery, to me, is invigorating. It is a new challenge. They are coming to camp and instead of being relaxed, they?re a little bit antsy. Even though they?re veterans, there is more tension. Why? Because they don?t know the situation. They don?t know if the coach is good. They don?t know if the manager is good. They don?t know if their teammates are good. I think that leads to excitement but also growth chances.

[Hakstol] ? I love the guys to lead the D that were minor D-type defensemen. In other words, they didn?t rely on skill. They had to know where to put their feet and their stick to survive. He was one of those guys. Being a coach, I think he?s really going to help. The other thing he?s going to do is that ? [DJ Smith] had been here a while and had an opinion on players ? he has no opinions on these guys. If you?ve been in the organization and you think your opinion? She?s a brand new opportunity for you. He is just looking for who he is going to be comfortable with. That?s who he is putting out on the ice.

Paging Justin Holl.

And I'm guessing Mikheyev-Tavares-Kapanen.

Tavares just had a baby so he?ll be joining the team a little later.
Kapanen and Mikheyev with different groups for now.

When Muzzin is taking reps with Barrie instead, Liljegren is partnered with Kivihalme.

Using team structure to infer lines, I wonder if

Mikheyev - Kerfoot - Moore

Is the 3rd line we should anticipate?

Herman explained the absence of Tavares, but if the top 3 centers are in different groups then Tavares will be in the first group and that leads one to wonder if Kapanen-Tavares-Bracco could be 3some in the short term.

Of course, others may actually know who is lining up with who...

I?d kinda love to see what would happen if Moore was slotted in to one of the top lines in a Hyman-esque role.

Hey guys, it looks like we have a good team.

I?ve seen these charts a ton of times.

On the one hand, I wonder if the circumstances in which Marner is without Tavares (eg, as a pk roles into 5-on-5? Just with crappy players?) are somehow skewing the results. (There?s also the Marner-vs-Brown withyou/withoutyou with Kadri that don?t shed Marner in a positive light.).

On the other hand, I can?t help wonder if, well, they are telling us something pretty important.

[this is an example of how to write a content-free post in case anyone wants to follow my lead.]

I?d just be surprised if a rookie (Mikheyev) wound up in such a difficult situation right away.  Wouldn?t you expect Babcock to shelter him a little?
