Trevor Moore looks like option 1 on wingers to call up.

Is Hyman injured?

Merely bruised, but everything is intact, unbent, and unbroken.

So, he'll be repaired and ready for action soon?

His injury is described as a hip pointer (bone bruise to the hip). Probably from getting run into the dasher impacting above the pants. Healing time depends on which part of the hip is affected (most likely the iliac crest) and whether the bone was damaged (avulsion).

It sounds like it's minor, but they're also going to take their time with him given his position is earned and locked in, he plays a key rough and tumble role, and it allows for a longer evaluation of Ennis/Leivo and whoever else steps up (Moore, Grundstrom, Engvall, Timashov).

impressions so far:

Marincin, Subban, Swedish twins, Carrick (cusp) are definitely ready for more Marlies time

I think Borgman and Rosen are worth a shot, a least one of them.

Engvall and to some degree Timashov have looked good and probably will be two years away at the earliest.  Bracco and Brooks ditto

SDA looks like a future star, a la Marner. Very talented but will need longer (3 years or 4)

Like Clark a lot, he certainly came out of nowhere. and he can skate, hustle and fight, which may be what we were looking for in Martin

Johnsson although not great last night is improving, perhaps he just needs some more game action. Kapi looked very good last night, he is back.

Lindholm has been more than a pleasant surprise, looks like he owns the 4th C spot

Cracknell also has impressed. Jooris not at all.

Big question; Does Leivo make it this year or is he traded?

My thoughts on the Goaltending are in the last game thread.

[It] seems like Auston Matthews, a left shot, will be called on to replace Tyler Bozak, a right shot. There are two schools of thought about this. The first is that he?s Auston F. Matthews, first overall pick and he belongs on the first power-play unit. The opposing view is that building a power play involves a mix of talent and fit, with a lot of the fit issue coming down to handedness. By that school of thought, if the touches on the power play are going to predominantly go to Rielly, Marner and Tavares, it?s less important that he?s Auston Matthews and more important that he?s a left-hand shot.

There?s evidence that makes me question whether this is an optimal use of Toronto?s resources. Historically, power plays with a left shot on the left flank haven?t done as well as those with a right shot on the left flank. In addition, putting Matthews on an already loaded power-play unit undoubtedly weakens the other unit. If he?s not adding value to the first unit that?s at least equivalent to what he could add to the second unit, what?s the point?

This was my question to, regarding PP deployment. I get that having too many weapons for the defense to adequately cover is a useful thing (see Penguins), but the Leafs succeeded just fine with Bozak being largely a passenger on that unit last year -- he was a bigger factor when Zaitsev was the D on top (right hand to left flank pass is easier).

Is Matthews' catch and release good enough to beat out the historically super effective RH one-timer on the goalie's blocker side?

Are those gains, if any, going to offset the loss of power to PP2? What's the impact of having Par Lindholm by default coming out after a PP? or a less fresh top 3 centre? Maybe Nylander gets a spin between Johnsson and Kapanen before it resets to Tavares? Maybe Kadri plays the middle man on PP2 instead to give it more face-off options?

My biggest concern with Matthews on PP1 is will Mitch still try and funnel the puck towards the net as often.  It was super effective going to Kadri/JvR after receiving from Rielly- it led to TONS of shots and rebounds etc.  Is he going to try the more difficult royal road pass to Matthews too often?

Having that many weapons means the defense will have to pick its poison to some degree, but I hold reservations that it will really improve PP1 production rates.  If PP1 is spending much more time on the ice then maybe it outweights the expected drop off in PP2 production rates.

A few cuts. Sandin's is interesting as it still hasn't been decided (or at least announced) where he'll be playing this season.

Perhaps Sandin will attend Marlies camp and then take it from there

Doesn't loaned to the Marlies imply he's gonna be playing there this season?  It would make sense to see more of Sandin-Liljegren since they'll be big parts of the Leafs blueline in the future.  Having him develop on North American ice, under the watch of their own coaches and trainers makes a lot of sense.

Not necessarily. They open their pre-season tomorrow. Maybe this is just to get him a game there, and then he'll be called back to the Leafs to close out their pre-season schedule on Saturday.

He's got smaller ice experience in the O, so I'm not sure going back to larger ice would be ideal.  I'd prefer they do what they did with Liljegren and have him get used to the lessening time to manage the puck.

I think it'll be fun to watch, and if it doesn't work it doesn't take long to change the personnel.
