The fact that Kadri, Gunnarsson, Franson, Fraser and Holzer are all RFAs this summer scares me - you have to think all of them will deserve a raise if they keep playing the way they are...

Fraser and Holzer won't get much. Defensive guys rarely get the big money.

Exception to the rule baby

It will be interesting to watch this logjam on defence play out. Even with Komisarek out of the picture (as most assume) the Leafs have too many NHL ready d-men. Remember too that while Kostka, Holzer and Fraser have come up and impressed, Eakins said many times his best defenceman was Ranger. He may decide he wants to be a Leaf next season and add to the talent pool.

It really amazes me how we went from having only a few reliable guys on 'D' to having oodles of NHL calibre defenseman in our system vying for spots. This was the work of Burke.

Agreed Red Leaf.....Burke's legacy is our future. So many people just want to deficate on this man for no reason except....he is full of bluster....bring on some more bluster...please

...trade for Korpikoski, sign Dupuis and Perry, some funkiness due to capgeeks requirements ( roster size etc. ) but interesting nonetheless...

I would only agree to that if Kadri is ready to take over as the top line centre or one of Kessel or JVR moves into that role, pushing Bozak down to the 3rd line.

Otherwise, priority needs to be landing the centre, so would figure out how to fit in Perry's buddy from Anaheim too. :)

I'm all for the 'buddy' system... trying to be realistic-ish-y with things too... Korpikoski and Dupuis would add significantly to the teams ability to pk and enhance overall team play, if Getzlaf was a reality then things are, well, different.

I doubt we see a Carlyle team without a tough guy in the lineup, just a hunch.

I'm also not ready to give up on Kulemin, I don't know that Korpikoski and Dupuis are significantly better than him.

Also not sure Kostka is ahead of Fraser on the depth chart.

Could be right with all that Wigwal, just what I was thinking off the cuff and the order of the D is definitely up for grabs/opinion. Fwiw, Kulemin is still my favourite Leaf so...

I think if I'm Nonis, I call Getzlaf and Perry on UFA day with a $7x8 year deal for each of them.  if that fails, go to plan "B".

Sure, that works for me, not sure if it will work but it's worth a shot...

I thought that 7 years was the max for a FA whos coming from a different club.

It is.

so its 8mil x 7 years then?

8 mil seems a bit over the top but it probably depends on what Perry's numbers look like at the end of this season and the playoff run he has.  As valuable a player as I think he is, he hasn't really put up the numbers other than 1 season to get into that super elite level salary.

$7 x 7 yrs with as much up front "bonus" money as you can put in a deal now would be the way I would go with it.

But in the end, if $8 is what makes it happen then so be it, as long as you can structure the cap to make it fit.

edit: I should add, he can probably use the Parise deal as a template, minus the excessive years... so that added up to $7.5 mil / year on average.  So yeah, maybe $8 mil is where it ends up going.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the Leafs can be the Wild of 2013 and sign the top 2 free agents.  I'm going to go out on a limb and say this is likely not going to happen.  But regardless, I do hope the Leafs can sign Ryane Clowe this summer.  A huge presence, great leader, can play in the Top 6 and provide serious protection, and given his poor production so far might come in at a decent number (David Clarkson, in contrast, is going to cash in big time).

Being a Newfoundland boy, he must have watched the St. John's Maple Leafs at some point and hopefully there's some emotional capital Nonis can use to his advantage.  1A centre is still the position of greatest need, but for me Clowe would be a really important free agent piece to add.

But the Wild of 2013 are 11th in the conference.
