I don't know O'Reilly that well. What do you think you would need to give up for him?
Something along the lines of two 1sts and a 2nd, I would imagine. Maybe a bit less.

I don't really think you're acknowledging here that O'Reilly made it into the NHL as an 18-year old. His career high in the OHL doesn't really mean a whole lot considering he missed out on two potential seasons there. And 66 points in 68 games isn't really anything for a 17-year old to be ashamed about.
As for his NHL point totals, they've improved in each of his 3 seasons. And when looking at his first two seasons I again need to stress that we're talking about somebody who was 18/19 years old, getting 3rd line minutes and barely any powerplay time. At the age of 20 he finally got a chance to play some big minutes and had a breakout season. I get being afraid of one-year wonders and anomalies, but to me that breakout season didn't seem like a coincidence.

I would imagine he's worth a lot to Colorado.

And? Is he worth that much to Toronto?

I'd imagine the conversation would start with Gardiner. O'Reilly is kind of like Bergeron, or at least that's what he projects to be.

Good idea.
2 years of Kessel and 6 years of JVR for potentially 1 year of Getzlaf.
Not to mention Kessel outperformed Getzlaf last year by quite a wide margin also.

21. Let's play some cap circumvention. Hockey Night In Canada producer Brian Spear came up with a couple of ideas, so I ran them past NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly. First, NBA-style sign-and-trades. Basically, a basketball free agent wants to leave his team for somewhere else, but still wants the extra year you get for staying put. Voila! Original team signs him and trades him. Can this happen in the NHL?
22. Daly's answer: Yes, provided the player was on a team's reserve list as of the most recent trade deadline. Therefore, anyone acquired on that date is ineligible.
23. Second, a player says, "I'll sign a one-year deal with your team as a free agent provided I get eight years next summer." In essence, this guy gets nine years where he should have received seven.
24. Daly's answer: You can do this, but we better not find a paper trail. Google "Joe Smith" and "Timberwolves." NBA commissioner David Stern crushed Minnesota for that one.
