Unofficial 2013-2014 Armchair GM Thread

I think with the cap pressure we have (and the fact that I want Vinny) I'd prefer we took a run at Boyes over Horton/Clarkson.  I think Boyes would come in cheaper (possibly in the 2.5-3M range) and provide production, probably, between the two.

I think I'd be pretty happy with the additions of Horton and Ference. If Vinny comes, then fine, but I think the Leafs would benefit more by adding more sandpaper to their lineup.

I'd even rather have Horton over Clarkson. At least with Horton you know you're getting a top-6 forward. I have a serious problem overpaying for 3rd liners. Look at every Stanley Cup finalist in the past 5 years and find me more than 2 overpaid players (total) in a teams bottom-6 group of forwards.

Why not both?  Horton and Clarkson.

The rest of my post explains why. I don't want to overpay for a third liner.

You don't think the cap will at least reign in the UFA deals a bit?

Everybody knows that the cap going down is a one-year thing. It will go up quite a bit next offseason. Some guys might get screwed over because of it, but it's the players that are being bought out and the more minor free agents.

Huh. Nik had convinced me giving up Scrivens and Frattin  -- while retaining another half of a million in salary -- wasn't so bad... now I'm not so sure.

To be fair Nik's opinion did sort of rest on the idea that not having enough cap space to drastically overpay David Clarkson was a good thing.

I really hope that Nonis is talking to Joe Sakic about Stastny. They drafted McKinnon like people thought and I forget which of the two, but Roy or Sakic said they want Dushene and McKinnon on their top two lines. That leaves Stastny and O'rielly (who as was pointed out to me can't be traded for another year) as their #3 center. So at 6.6 million, it would almost seem imperative that they trade Paul.

I know they're not in the hurry that Nonis would be, as he'd have to make a move right after acquiring Stastny, as Grabbo would most certainly have to be traded or bought out IMO.

It just seems like the next logical thing to do, unless Nonis knows he's got LeCavalier in the bag, which I'm sure is a long shot anyway.

Probably not, still it's interesting to see what they can do at this point, cap wise.

Yeah, Burke left the Leafs in good cap shape from where I'm looking. Along with the cap space, it is good timing that the cap also going down can perhaps create availability in other places, as teams cut loose more valuable players to clean up passed mistakes or just being a deep team.

I think that is why Nonis is waiting on any buyouts. He might want to buyout Komisarek, but if a big time player gets cut loose, like LeCavalier has, the Leafs can act on it, but also take a problem from another team might be more lucrative a deal for us. So he has to maybe deal with Komisarek at the last possible chance, to leave open to other avenues.

It's pretty clear to me, after that epic collapse against the Bruins, that above all else, we need better defence and more shutdown type players. Bolland may help in that department, and perhaps Horton, but I really think a veteran D man or two should be the next priority.

If we had that line-up above, I don't think we'd need to upgrade the defense personally. If you could get a veteran at or around the same price, sure, I'd do it, but I don't think it's necessary.

We're stronger in goal and we'd be very strong up front.

But that's not gonna prevent defensive breakdowns like we saw on many occasions last season. The offence wasn't the problem. Sure the goaltending might get better, but I think they really need at least one 1st or 2nd pairing veteran defenseman to augment that back end.

Well, I hope that if Nonis does that that it will include trading Liles, Gunnarsson and buying out Komisarek. Not to mention acquisition cost, that would be steep as it is.

Sure and Ference would be nice to that end ( for example ) and maybe you could package Franson with Grabovski for something interesting if Lecavalier is coming in to open up that defensive spot.

Adding Gordon would also be along those lines.

I like Gordon as well if the price is right.

Extending the Boston theme for a moment, JVR is the only big top 6 forward we have and Kulemin is a decent size. Apparently, the Rags can't afford the cap space for Clowe. Penner & Horton also seem ready to test UFA waters. Claskson isn't as big but plays bigger than he is. I could debate the merits of those guys. But there do seem to be a few more good sized forwards available for the top 9 than normal. Hopefully, we can snag one that fits at a decent price.

In my truly fantasy world the Leafs sign Gordon, Horton and Scuderi/Ference.

Lupul-Kadri-Kessel
JVR-Grabovski-Horton
Bolland-McClement-Kulemin
McLaren-Gordon-Colborne
Orr

Phaneuf-Gunnarsson
Gardiner-Scuderi/Ference
Franson-Liles
Fraser

I like that a lot

Agreed. That's exactly what I would do as well. I'd prefer Scuderi to Ference since he can play the right side with Gardiner, but Ference seems like the more likely player to sign.

Just a line-up note though, I'd prefer Lupul and JVR to switch. JVR is more physical and better defensively. The Kadri-Kessel line could use that more than the second line since Grabovski and Horton both possess one of those traits already.

?We are working on some things that might free up some (salary) cap space and if that happens, it will have an impact (on what the Leafs might do in free agency),? Nonis said on Sunday. ?We?re definitely going to look at our options between now and Friday at every position and there might be some things that open up, more likely via trade. I think teams are going to leave New Jersey and take stock of what they have.

?It?s not going to go quiet after today.?

In terms of current contracts beyond Komisarek over $2 mil that could "free up some cap space", I doubt these are likely even though "anyone is tradeable":
Kessel, Phil ? $5,400,000
Lupul, Joffrey ? $5,250,000
Van Riemsdyk, J. ? $4,250,000
Bolland, Dave ? $3,375,000

which leaves these:
Grabovski, M. ? $5,500,000
Kulemin, Nikolai ? $2,800,000
Phaneuf, Dion ? $6,500,000
Liles, J. ? $3,875,000

and I'd even question Kulemin & Phaneuf being on that list but anything is possible I suppose.

From those remarks, I suspect it's even more unlikely that Bozak has a future in Toronto (if a remote chance existed after the Bolland trade)

Just out of curiosity - what is Fraser McLaren's status?  NHLnumbers says he's a UFA IV, but Capgeek says he's an RFA.
