Hoo boy, the UK is going to have an interesting couple of years.

Is that the couple of years it has left before it breaks up?

It's an interesting question. I don't think the SNP will get a second referendum and even then I think it's a terrible time for one as I think Scottish people who voted to leave the EU(38% of them) probably wouldn't support leaving the UK just to rejoin the EU so they'd have to get at least 50% from the remaining 62% of voters which seems like a tall order.

Northern Ireland seems like the bigger deal although you'd know more about that than I do. Between a customs barrier in the Irish Sea and Sinn Fein winning some traditionally Unionist seats it feels like big changes could be afoot in your neck of the woods.

Sometimes I like to imagine going back in time 7 or 8 years and having to explain to my younger self that what would be trending on Twitter in December of 2019 would be JK Rowling being in trouble for her views on Biological Essentialism, the USDA taking Wakanda off of its list of Free Trade partners and the impeachment of President Trump.

Like, would my younger self think I'd gone horribly insane or just was on bath salts or...

At least I'm sure we have a universally loved Star Wars movie to distract us from this godforsaken mess of a world. Now to take a big sip of coffee and head over to RottenTomatoes.com...

Definitely the bath salts :)

I call BS.  We all know it's a ploy by the US to get cheaper vibranium.

I would agree. I still don?t think Scotland would vote for independence despite the Brexit thing anyway. But I doubt the Conservatives will give them the chance of a referendum as you say.

Northern Ireland is interesting, you touched on the republican/nationalist/Irish parties tipping the balance in their favour for the first time, but there?s also been a large shift to the middle away from both ?extreme? sides of Sinn Fein and the DUP and I think that shift to the middle is where a reunited all Ireland is more likely as people start to vote pragmatically rather than just ideologically

Bit of collateral damage in Iran then? With multiple Canadians on the flight too

I know it's kind of meaningless and symbolic regardless but this week's news really has me wondering just how long the Monarchy really has. Maybe in the UK where it's really tied up with the culture and tourism but here in Canada it just seems really unlikely that in the coming century we're going to all be on board with asking people to swear their allegiance to what will probably be a series of elderly billionaire Kings.

Like I said, I know it's almost entirely symbolic but I think people forget how that symbolism has real meaning because the last 70 years that symbolism has been occupied by a harmless seeming old lady who seems a bit like your granny. When all of our coins have the face of some poncy public school British doofus on them I think there'll be some real questions ahead.

Agreed. Do you think Prince Charles will sidestep the crown for William?

A bit of a trip down memory lane...I was pricing out a new PC and checking out the cost of RAM sticks. The going ballpark rate these days is around $100/16GB which got me to reminiscing about the days when the rule of thumb used to be $100/GB and the even older days when it was around $1/MB. I wonder how much RAM I could buy for the sum total I've spent on it so far in my life...probably somewhere in the PB range.

I haven't specd out a build in 8 or so years. My rig is still holding up shockingly well, but probably wouldn't be able to handle more modern games. I could do Fallout 4 pretty well on moderate settings.

I don?t but I do think there?s a good chance he will be one of the shortest serving monarchs just due to his age already. His mother may even out last him

I have to update my primary work machine every 2-3 years and have to say pretty cutting edge. It's disgustingly expensive, although at least I can write it off.

I almost feel dumb when talking about computers, but I have two ryzen rigs, one 8th generation intel, and 3 different laptops. Here's the thing, I enjoy building and upgrading computers, but I would probably do fine with only two computers, then I have several gpu's just collecting dust :)

For heavy CPU-based numbercrunching in software that can take advantage of multiple cores (ie not most games) the Ryzen CPUs obliterate Intel's. For the sort of stuff I do even an out-of-the-box R9 x3900 will be about 40% faster than the Intel i9-9900x...and overclocked on a 570 board it can get upwards of 80% faster depending on the task. The flip side is the Intel chips tend to be at least 10% better for gaming and don't have the same heat management issues.

Happy Martin Luther King Day everyone.

?And one day we must ask the question, ?Why are there forty million poor people in America? And when you begin to ask that question, you are raising questions about the economic system, about a broader distribution of wealth.? When you ask that question, you begin to question the capitalistic economy. And I?m simply saying that more and more, we?ve got to begin to ask questions about the whole society??

A limited series podcast I'd recommend:  The Shrink Next Door.  It's a true story told in 8 episodes that I think is better listened to without first knowing what it's about.

Quoting an old post here since I listened to it based on your recommendation.

Paul Rudd and Will Ferrell are starring in an upcoming series based on this.

I'm sitting in an airport...Is there a recommended app to download this?
