Useless Thread

EDIT:

I need some help from those of you that are knowledgeable about laptops:

Looking at buying a work laptop to replace my current one.

Here's what I need:

1.  touchscreen 15" at least with decent graphics
2.  Win 10 Pro
3.  512 SSD at least
4.  i7
5.  keyboard including number pad
6.  16GB Ram at least
7.  Rugged enough for professional use, I use it all day long.

Thank you in advance for your thoughts...

If you open up a business account with a hardware reseller like CDW, Canada Computers, their sales associate could help you ID something that suits your specs.

For business/Windows 10, I'd be looking at Lenovo ThinkPad/Yoga or Dell Latitude/XPS almost exclusively, but at these specs expect to spend north of $2500. Lenovos have the better keyboard.

15" screen machines don't often come with number pads, and if they do, there are weight and footprint gains to the whole machine, which make it a little harder to carry. A Bluetooth numpad ($30-60) as an accessory wouldn't be a bad idea if the machine you like doesn't have one included.

Yeah, with all of those requirements it feels like you'd be fairly limited to higher end models from the major manufacturers.

If you are cheap, like me, you could get an off-lease laptop and add RAM and upgrade the SSD.  These are corp/business machines that are built to take abuse. Pretty much all ThinkPads, Dell and HP machines.  Stock is continually coming and going so if you don't see what you need check back often.

I have personally purchased two systems from Bauer Systems and they are honest and upfront about conditions of the machines.  They are in Burlington and you can go pick it up yourself.

Another option is Sager/Clevo laptop.  These are high quality laptops that you can pick and choose certain features you require.

They have a Canadian distributor;

The Dell XPS series is excellent. You can get the 15" model with your specs for under $2000 (more if you want 32 GB RAM or i9 processor). I absolutely love mine. It's got a pressure-sensitive screen so I bought a Dell active pen and it's fantastic for taking hand-written notes and drawing. It's a really sleek looking laptop with a really solid build (very thin, all metal; definitely looks and feels high-end.)

The hinges allow a full 360-degree opening, so you can use it as a tablet or it can stand up if you're watching movies and such. This is great on an airplane, especially for the 15" model (mine is the 13").

Even without a separate graphics card, I can run high-end 3d modeling software on it.

The only downside is the webcam is placed under the screen which tends to give a strange point-of-view of you during video calls. For some, this is a deal-breaker. Others don't care or use a third-party webcam plugged into it.

After 2.5 years of very heavy use, the battery is starting to show a reduced lifespan, but it can be changed for relatively cheap.

Thanks guys, IT is suggesting Lenovo P53?

That?s the one my quick search pulled up as well

Yeah, thank you.  I find it ugly though!

I can't tell if this is real or satire, but it made me laugh all the same  ;D

It's all black, and looks like it was made in 2003.

If I have to use it and look at it all day long, I'd at least like it to be nice looking!

This is a good suggestion.

EDIT:  Looks like no number keypad.  Bad suggestion.

For a bit more coin, I'd actually go for the Microsoft Surface Book 3 or Surface Laptop 3. They're really good with outstanding build quality. I had an older model and my partner's got the SP6, and I have to say I'm quite jealous.

It'll be very hard to find a 15" with a number pad.

I have an HP Elitebook 15" with num pad. Its not touchscreen and only 720p but I think newer models might have more. The problem is everything you want is gonna cost a lot (unless you don't care about cost).

Thank you for the help here, everyone.  My IT department has been sent your suggestions...

Does anyone have an opinion on this deal:  https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/dell-15-6-touchscreen-2-in-1-laptop-intel-core-i7-10510u-512gb-ssd-16gb-ram-windows-10/13924607

That's sweet. I really like that it comes with the pen (about $60) and built-in storage for it. And you found your number pad!
