Van Riemsdyk Being Mentioned

I'd still trade Schenn for the right player but I'm starting to believe that JVR might not be him now. I don't know... so torn. I guess I'd want to see JVR back for a couple of weeks to see how he does and be reminded of why I might make this deal... and it's entirely possible I wouldn't.

Myself I would keep Schenn. too much upside, and you know defence take longer to give it.

Agreed. Schenn could end up being a really solid D man, but then again JVR could be lights out in a few years too. Tough call, but I think I would do a straight up trade today if I could.

I watched it last night too and I dont remember how exactly he worded it but he was pretty clear that he was certain that Burke intended to make another attempt at JVR. In Dreggers own mind at least.

Im less concerned with acquiring someone like JVR at this point and much more concerned with doing everything under the sun to try and pry a Nash, Getzlaf or Staal out from somewhere. I feel like trading for JVR wouldnt be nearly as significant an improvement as some people seem to think.

Why not just sign Zach Parise as a UFA?  We don't lose anything and we get a first line center.  Trade grabbo and we have a Parise - Connolly as our 1-2 centers.

For starters, Parise isn't a centre.

...and I guess, why would the Leafs trade Grabovski and keep Connolly?

I think they move Connolly if they can.  Why pay a guy $4.75 million if he's not the bona fide first line centre?  I see they still like to use Bozak with Kessel and Lupul...and Grabbo's the second line centre.  So Connolly is on the third line?

I thought Burke would cut bait on him after the season, but I see on CapGeek that he's signed through next season too.  Wait, what does that mean for Bozak?

Well Tyler is signed through next year too so barring any deals I don't think it means a lot for him, he's got some chemistry with Lupul and Kessel and he's a pretty darn reasonable cap hit.

To me Connolly was always a short term stop gap while the Leafs figured out what they had in some of the younger players.

A third line of Lombardi Connolly and Army isn't bad ( super expensive, still ) but there are some decisions to make with Kadri, Frattin and Colborne coming up too.

Also, there's 4 significant players to sign with, as of now, 13 or so mil in cap space next year, which shouldn't make things difficult to get them signed if they want to ( any adjusted differential from cap/cba changes should still end up in the Leafs favour ). If I had to guess, Jonas will get something similar to Reimer, Franson will get something similar to Gunnarsson, Grabovski could get close to 5 and Kulemin will probably get something close to 3.

I think Connolly will be a Leaf next year, fwiw.

If I were a betting man, I would wager that JVR is no longer on the table, at least not for a defenseman.

For starters, he is.  He played centre exclusively during college.

Not before the deadline.  However they might revisit the trade during summer.  This would be a trade for long term needs for both clubs.

So, at least 7 years ago?

Which woudl only make him one of dozens and dozens of players who were drafted as centres, only to not be able to have success there in the NHL, but can on the wing.

Good for him. Except he's averaged 1 or 2 faceoffs per game since entering the NHL. So clearly the Devils don't really think much of him as a centre. So much so that they'd rather play Ilya Kovalchuk out of position and have a rookie centre their top line than put him in the middle.

Parise is as much of a centre as Phil Kessel is (who also played centre in college).
