Winnipeg Jets Thread

I get that, I'm just not sure why it matters.

I'm not sure how to explain it. It matters, I suppose, in the same way that the NHL's leading scorer wasn't Gerard Depardieu or how the sun doesn't revolve around the earth. Some things are true and some aren't.

But nothing untrue was said - Roman Hamrlik is the only player to have played against the Winnipeg Jets before on Washington.

The sky isn't orange - also not untrue

Uhhhh...

Sure, but those Winnipeg Jets were a completely different franchise that still is in existence. Why is the fact that no one else played a game against them before they moved relevant? That's my issue, really. What teams/players/whoever did against the old Jets is completely irrelevant when it comes to the new Jets.

Probably was posted just to show how few players are still around from when the former Jets franchise was there.

I'm speaking more generally.  Yeah, you can nitpick on stats like that, and the NHL's record books may get a little muddy with two different franchises using the Winnipeg Jets name.

But for the most part, it really doesn't matter.  For the fans that are cheering for them, today's Jets may as well be the same team as the old one.

But, again, what's the relevance?

I'm sure some fans are curious to know if there are any players who have actually played an NHL game in Winnipeg before.  It's relevant if you care to know - if you don't, it's not.  It's hardly some crazy remark, it's just a fluff comment.

Ok, but that sentence there is a pretty basic and reasonable thing to say, I guess. I think most fans of a team would be able to say for themselves, you know, "Not many players on our team are old and it's been 15 years since there was a team in Winnipeg so that figures".

I think the emphasis there on the "Jets" strikes a lot of people as implying that because of the name the franchise owners chose they can somehow claim a connection to something they had no part of.

I think most fans of any team who know how long it's been since the original Jets left Winnipeg, would also be able to understand that there is a difference between the two franchises without needing it spelled out for them every time.

They share the exact same name, it's going to be implied either directly or indirectly I think unavoidably.  I don't really see a big deal, but hey, that's me.  I'm certainly capable of recognizing the difference.

But the issue isn't that the difference isn't being spelled out, it's that it's being ignored or downright contradicted.

I don't think anyone's saying it's the end of the world, just that it's obnoxious.

After having called Winnipeg a "cold place...no parks...no entertainment for families"....

This was Bryzgalov's gesture of apology (before the start of Saturday's game against the Flyers)...

Jets so far have done exactly what I predicted - this team in the playoffs with that home crowd can do some damage.

That Crowd is pretty intense, Clitty said the biggest adjustment was having to yell at your linemates and barely being able to hear them as well.

The fans at the MTS Centre are ruthless according to the coach of the Jets, Friday in the third period "Crosby's better" chants were yelled out by the fans and directed at Ovechkin lol

Last night after the game the Hurricanes players had some fun in the dressing room and were chanting "Jordan's better" towards Eric Staal haha

Ruthless and stupid then.

?? Maybe I'm missing something here that sentence is about Eric's teammates ribbing him?

I guess it will just be crickets doing the chanting once the playoffs start.

Yes it is. Eric's response was along the lines: Jordan is good, but I don't think he is better.

Whoops, my bad. I misread it as the Winnipeg crowd chanting that. Partly because the guy who runs a Winnipeg fan forum suggested chanting that on twitter prior to the game.
