Wickenheiser shouldn't have been a penalty at all. Her skate hit the leg of the American.

Why does that make it not a penalty shot offence?  She was taken down from behind by the US player, they don't specify how you take the player down - the US player got her body in the way of her ability to skate.

I have no idea what that US player was even doing. She was clearly a much faster skater than Wickenheiser  and would have probably caught up and been able to take a clean swipe at the puck in another couple of strides. Why try and stop her at the blueline?

It wasn't a cross-check. What's the correct call?

Huh?  Where are you getting cross-check from?

The referee called it a cross-check, though it clearly wasn't one.

Ohhhh, I watched it on mute/not 100% attention - assumed they called a trip.

Hilary Knight was called for a cross-check on Hayley Wickenheiser.

that's what WE were all asking, too! Ask the ref! :)

See above.

Not sure about IIHF but in the NHL an accidental trip isn't a penalty. Knight didn't intentionally trip Wickenheiser. Wickenheiser lifted her skate and hit Knight's thigh. That's what i'm going with, weak call IMO.

I'm fine going with that then, I haven't seen the replay and I only saw the initial play in real-time.

What a finish. most enjoyable. ;D, although it kind of makes me worry because there's still a Kessel looking for gold, and  I worry this one may get his.

Honestly, you could be right. It's one of those calls that could go either way. It will always get called a penalty in that situation.
