if they are on a downward trend i.e rebuild...next year will be hard to dislike them or hope for any rivalry since they will be in the same conference.

I'm not so sure about that.

Both teams will be at very equal levels skill wise(if not, Detroit still holds the upper hand) and the rivalry stayed relatively strong while the teams were in opposite conferences. I see the rivalry only reigniting considering the proximaty to each other and the past between the two teams.

mentioned this in another thread...word from a source close to the wings (reported on Kukla's Korner) is that datsyuk is going home to russia after next season when his current deal expires.  The rivalry won't be as fun without him but at least the leafs might win some games.

I don't buy those reports. They come up for jsut about every prominent Russian player, and very very few actually go through with it.

I understand that.  I just think that this might be the one.  He'll be 36 and he'll make just as much money over there and be home with family etc. plus he was one of the guys who stayed to play in the allstar game after teh lockout ended.

I think that's something most people will have to see to believe.

I stumbled upon that rumour about a year ago on the Wings board at hf. Apparently Wings fans were speculating about it for a long time. Family and culture seem to be the key factors.

But it's more likely that he signs a 1 or 2 year extension, and then goes home.

The Sabres sent Grigorenko back to the QMJHL.

That's quite the boost for his junior team. Especially since I think they only have one or two more games before the playoffs start. And this way the Sabres should be able to get him on their AHL team for the playoffs when Quebec's season is complete.

It's still ridiculous that that they kept him this long and burned a year of his ELC though

Good so far, two teams below us losing - Rangers (most importantly) and Capitals.

It's still amazing how bad those two teams are doing. Both were picked to win their divisions by a lot of people before the season. Works out great for us though of course.

On the subject of goalie spraying in shootouts. .should it be curbed?  HNIC's Ron Maclean thinks so...

Also, some GMs may propose a 3-on-3 ("extra") overtime feature in lieu of the shootout.  Plausible or just keep things as they are for now?...

I vote for the 3 on 3 OT.

The shootout is gimmick and horrible to watch. They don't kick fieldgoals to determine the winner in a football game.

The whole concept of 3 points game is wrong in the first place. This should be corrected first.
One option is to make a win in regulation worth of 3 pts, OT/SO win 2 pts, OT/SO loss 1 pt and loss in regulation naturally worth of zero points. Then let?s talk about SO whether to use 5 shooters, or replace it with whatever OT format.
The second option represents good old system - reintroduce a tie and get rid of the SO. Winner of the OT gets 2 points, looser nothing. It worked well for several decades and it would make .500 trashold meaningful again.
I am personaly fine with both.

The NHL introduced overtime for the regular season in 1983-84 and the OTL point in 1999.

They felt the OT periods consisted of teams sitting back protecting their points as the number of ties had been increasing. I don't see it something that was working for several decades. They wanted to change  the way the OT periods were being played so they changed the point system.

I'd like 10 minutes 4-on-4 OT, keep the OTL point and end games after 10 minutes of scoreless OT in a tie and dropping the shootout.

I know the shootout isn't going anywhere but, that would be my preference for OT.

Are there many people around here who didn't like ties and preferred to see a winner and loser from a game?  I personally had no problems with ties and wish they still existed.

I know that's not going to happen as it seems the camp of having a winner or loser is much greater than I thought it'd be.

I like the 5 minute OT... But after that if no one scores I feel each team gets one point and move on. I hate the shootout to decide important extra points. But if it menat getting rid of shootout I wouldn't mind a tie after 60 minutes'

If the SO is reality, make a regulation win worth of 3 points. In every game there are 3 points to be handed out, not like today that some games are worth of 3 points and some only 2. It is very simple. You win in regulation - 3 points, you go into OT - both team have a point, the winner of either OT or SO gets the second point.

Nah... they should just throw footballs through car tires. Best of 3.
