Canucks signed Higgins to a 4 year extension at 2.5 AAV.

Leaving them with $1,372,500 of cap room with 15 players under contract for next season.

Anyone think they'll buy out Ballard and Booth?  You're allowed 2 freebie buyouts right?

If you listen to Canuck fans, those are the two they'd like to see go. Looking at their cap situation, I think it makes sense. Ballard is a given, and Booth is taking up way too much cap space for what he's bringing.

I looked at at vancouver's cap sheet on D and I'm thinking "Who are Jason Garrison and Keith Ballard and why do they make almost $9M between them?"  I guess Garrison's stats this year are decent though, and it seems he was a UFA coming off a career year so demanded a decent price.

It's nice to see Ovechkin have a bit of an offensive resurgence.  34 points in his last 29 games.

Washington could be the darkhorse that grabs the SE division title. At any rate they've climbed back into the playoff race.

And good for Ovechkin. I'm not his biggest fan but it was sad to see him reduced to a 30 goal/60 point guy.

If the playoffs were to start today, the Islanders are in!  Eighth spot is temporarily theirs now...until further notice.  :)

What a bizarre award.  I don't get it.

The depth Bryan and Tim Murray put together is the reason Ottawa isn't in the basement.  He should be up for GM of the year.  But all they've done this year is sign a couple college UFAs and trade for a goon.  So how on earth could he win it?

Who gets credit for the Canadiens?

Yeah I know what you're saying, every GM inherits the last guy's success and failures.  Bergevin has done a good job in Montreal by cutting loose Gomez, drafting Galchenyk but he's also benefitting from having Markov back the entire season who solidifies that Habs defense, Price is Price and other pieces there were in place already.  Biggest move he made was hiring Therien and he looks like a genius now.  I have no answer for you, exec of the year is difficult to determine.

Well, it's a little like the Adams. It's not so much a discussion of what someone actually did but rather it's something that's all about a team exceeding expectations and coming up with the most simplistic narrative as to why.

Pretty cool story.

With Hiller sick and Bobkov not yet at rink, ANA signs 42-year-old Rob Laurie to one-day pro tryout. Laurie last played for El Paso in 2002

El Paso Buzzards of the WPHL, then the CHL. Could be considered high-A at best. Gives meaning to have pads will travel.

Ovechkin on an 82-game pace for 50 goals.  Milbury would've traded him.

It's amazing how quiet people are being about his performance. I know a lot of it has been recent so there might be more of a spotlight on him down the stretch, but the guy is tied for 2nd in goals now (assuming Tavares doesn't score tonight).

If Chicago earns a point in their game against Nashville tomorrow, they'll be the first team to officially clinch a playoff spot this season. If New Jersey loses to Buffalo, Pittsburgh would clinch a spot as well.
