Maybe it was Chiarelli sending a message then? LOL, just kidding.

Well, he's getting value, but it's not like he's really coming out ahead in the long-term here, I'd say. The short-term return for them is good, but, that's about it.

Funny that Bruins traded both Kessel and Seguin when they were 21 years old.  They have no problem dealing young players if the right package comes along.

But then Dallas called, is that what you're saying? I suppose the initial point was to send the message and have him play this year.

Well, or Boston "shopped" Seguin in sort of the same way that Nonis reportedly shopped Phaneuf. The difference being that Chiarelli got an offer that made sense.

I see what you're saying. I would expect that to go on anyway, but yeah, hopefully Toronto gets a call from Chuck Fletcher asking Nonis to take Suter's contract off his hands for Phaneuf.

The rumour a few days ago was that Boston was shopping Seguin to Calgary for the 6th overall pick + prospects. The deal fell through when the guy they wanted was taken 5th.

TSNBobMcKenzie: Not confirmed but names mentioned as POSSIBLE in BOS-DAL incl Seguin, Peverley, Ryan Button, Eriksson, Reilly Smith, Matt Fraser, Joe Morrow

DarrenDreger: Seguin and Peverley for sure going to Stars.

Chiarelli seems to have been in win now mode since he got there and I kind of see his point with the team that is put together there, but it seems a bit short sighted without Seguin being a bigger problem.

Peverley is a very nice piece.

Boston wins this one in the short-term, big time.

In the long run, Dallas has a pretty good chance at coming out on top though. Seguin will probably be a stud forward, but right now he doesn't look like he's worth his contract.

I have no idea who any of those guys are. Is it a boatload?  :)

Depends on the boat:

I thought he was being mentioned as buy out material.

I like Seguin but is his potential ceiling that much higher than what Eriksson basically has been for the last few seasons?

If he was, it would have been for cap reasons more than talent reasons. He's one of the best faceoff guys in the league and a solid defensive centre that can contribute to the offence. He hit 20 goals his last full season in Atlanta. If he's used in more of a two-way role than a strictly defensive role, he's definitely capable of 15-20 goals, 40+ points.

Eriksson is 28 before the season starts, so the question is now much longer can he play at that pace?  Seguin at 21, if he reaches hi potential, will give Dallas that sort of production for many more years.

I can see Seguin being a PPG+ player.

Granted, I've always been high on Seguin's talent and potential.

Maybe, but if you really just look at the assets being dealt and their contracts being dealt there's no age related reason to think Eriksson can't maintain his pace for three years and Seguin's deal only has him in Dallas for six years. Those three extra years aren't nothing but we can't just assume that Seguin will be in Dallas for 10-12 years.

I can see that too but that might still only work out to 10 or so points more than Eriksson has been capable of producing over his last couple of full seasons.

It's a valid question. Can't really say in any certainty that it's much higher.
