Rumors of Briere to Habs 2 years/$8M.  Just a rumor, don't shoot the messenger.

Real_ESPNLeBrun: Briere via text says nothing done yet

Real_ESPNLeBrun: Briere hasn't made his choice yet.

That's as of 10 minutes ago.

It'd be a match made in Munchinland.

Habs Top line all set:

There is Briere on the left, looking all sly after pulling this crazy new contract.

That's a battle of reporters, some Ottawa area reporter who is friends with Briere said it was done.  Given that they can't sign deals until tomorrow Briere can't say a deal is done.  We'll see if it's true.

Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun
NHL Deputy Commish Bill Daly sent out a memo to the 30 clubs today reminding them they can't make offers to free agents, only interview them

Briere's in the same boat as Lecavalier. If he had decided on a team, he'd be free to announce it. It just wouldn't be official until tomorrow.

I don't understand Daly's memo then.

Well, that explains why we haven't heard of anyone agreeing to terms then.

Daly's memo is referring to traditional UFAs, not guys that became UFAs as a result of a compliance buyout.

That's stupid then, a UFA is a UFA regardless of how they got there.

Yes and no. Guys that were bought out didn't have their contracts expire when the calendar rolled over into July. There became free agents once the buyout paperwork was filed and approved. That's why Lecavalier, for instance, was free to talk to teams at the draft.

Seems odd to have a window where pending free agents can meet with teams and yet ban all talk of terms. What's the point?

Agreed. I don't get it either.

Briere signs two-year deal with Habs.  Quite happy to be playing in his native Quebec.
