Were the Islanders the pioneer of the ridiculous contracts?

Yes. they blew the whole thing wide open with that contract.  Ironically it still stands as the worst one of all of them, by far.

May be the worst contract in league history?  I guess Yashin ranks up there too...oh...

I don't know if I'd agree with that. If all the other long-term contracts were structured the same way as DiPietro's, I don't think the league would have gone after them. They were the first to do a silly length contracts, but the ridiculous ones came a few years later.

Worst contract in terms of sheer size or worst in terms of dollars based on performance?  For the latter, I think DiPietro is the winner.  Kovalchuk's deal is far bigger but at least the guy plays like expceted, give or take.

I don't know about that. I think that the worst contract in league history should be reserved for something where they completely missed on how good a guy was as opposed to a contract that just got derailed because the guy was hurt.

Wade Redden, for instance.

The Islanders are still paying Alexei Yashin $2.2 million per year, and will continue doing so until 2015.  He hasn't played for them in 6 years.

TSNBobMcKenzie: In addition to NSH claiming Bobby Butler from NJD on waivers, PIT puts Zach Boychuk on waivers.

Does Carolina get the first refusal on Boychuk then?

So much for him having a chance to excel in Pittsburgh.

That rule is a little tricky. There are time limits on it (that I don't remember off hand) and other stipulations. I don't believe they do, but, I think, if they end up being awarded the claim, they can send him directly to the AHL without having to place him on waivers again.

DarrenDreger: Waivers: Boychuk awarded to NSH from PIT.  Pit places Kostopoulos and Wsh places Hamrlik on Waivers.

Nashville is pretty desperate for offence, so, not a surprise they'd take a chance there.

I don't get the Pittsburgh move as Capgeek has Kostopoulos signing a 1 year deal with them today!??

He had to pass through waivers.  Was playing in the AHL on a try-out.

They actually placed him on waivers with the intent to send him back down to the AHL.

TSNBobMcKenzie: NYR claim Roman Hamrlik from WSH and NJD claim Tom Kotsopoulos from PIT.

Real_ESPNLeBrun: Rangers had internally discussed picking up Hamrlik off waivers even before Staal's injury

ByKevinAllen: You don't buy Zach Boychuk: You only rent him. He's now back in Carolina after stops in Pittsburgh and Nashville this season.
