2012 Toronto Blue Jays Thread

Drabek done, Morrow and Hutchison out, and Alvarez needs to go back to the minors. So, a struggling Ricky Romero, aaaaand?

Was anyone else thinking that the game-winning home run was foul?  To me, it looked like the padding wasn't completely aligned with the foul pole and the part of the pad the ball struck was shifted towards foul territory.

Camera angles often make that hard to tell. Can't say for sure without standing at homeplate and looking down the baseline. I'm not 100% sure I agree with the call there, though.

I've watched the replay numerous times on the TSN website and there is a split-second camera shot that is almost lined up with the baseline and I still can't help but think that it was foul.  Even that dead-on camera shot of the fan repeatedly smacking the padding is less convincing for me that it was fair.

Yeah. Though, looking at a shot from the Milwaukee broadcast, it's pretty clear to me that the outside edge of the padding does line up with the outside edge of the foul line. It does look like it could be on a slight angle from bottom to top, but, that could also be due to the angle of the camera - though, upon closer inspection, it actually appears as though the bottom of the pad is shifted into fair territory rather than the top into foul territory.

I felt the replay was a little too inconclusive though. I can't say for sure that I see the ball making contact with the pad, nor can I say for sure the impact occurred before the ball made contact with the wall.

I wonder if it's covered in the ground rules, any ball that hits the padding is a homer.

Edit: nope, http://milwaukee.brewers.mlb.com/mil/ballpark/information/index.jsp?content=groundrules

Rasmus, Bautista, and Encarnacion show this Thornburg kid how they roll in the American League with back to back to back big flies.

The padding is considered to be part of the foul pole, so, it doesn't need to be in their specific ground rules - it's league wide. Anything marking the boundaries is considered to be fair territory. If it did hit the padding and it did hit it before hitting the wall behind it, the right call was made. I just still feel it was too inconclusive for the call on the field to be overturned based on the replays we were provided.

3 runs walked in tonight by Jays pitchers. Another on a hit batter.

Control, control. You must learn control.

And now, a grand slam with a couple of those walks on base. Lovely.
