Holland says he believes there is some appetite to extending OT to 7 or 8 mins. Some GMs want 4on4 all the way, he likes 3on3 component...

But it looks like this will be discussed -- expanding OT to de-emphasize shootout.

FriedgeHNIC: Armstrong is one GM who wants longer OT but not 3on3, says Lamoriello proposed long change for both teams, should make it tougher to defend.

The shootout is obviously not going anywhere, but I like the fact that GMs are exploring all reasonable avenues to minimize it. They clearly get that it's a terrible way to decide a game.

Good stuff.

I hope they can implement the change soon. OT is some of the most entertaining hockey we get to see, and extending it puts shootouts in a much less prominent position of importance.

So the Yakupov thing doesn't sound like it's been resolved yet. His agent Larionov is meeting with the Oilers to discuss his future with the team.

"I asked Craig, I said, 'If you guys [are] not happy with him or you have no room for him ... we're willing to make a move. Any team,' " Larionov said.

It sounds like the seeds have been sown. When something like this happens it's usually only a matter of time before the team parts ways with the player.

Extended 4on4 is an awesome idea.  I think as long as you aren't playing 20 minutes of it, the Colton Orr's of the NHL still won't have to see the ice and I think it significantly cuts down on the number of games ending in a shootout.

On an unrelated note.  Wow Rolston is a terrible coach in Buffalo.  Matt Moulson was benched during a drubbing because he couldn't be bothered to move him to another line.  The coach didn't talk to him once about why he was benched and still hasn't.  The guy has 8 points in 7 games for the Sabres since the trade.

I was surprised to hear Dredger (I think) say that the Leafs inquired about Fiddler in Dallas when Moulson would fit under the Cap with the Leafs this year.  To me that is like looking at a Chev Impala in your neighbourhood when for a bit more money down the street there is a used affordable Porsche.

I certainly hope the extended 4-on-4 overtime passes.  My only question is the logistics of it -- would there be a flood in between?  The ice gets really sluggish as it is with an extra 5 minutes.  I can imagine what it'd be like when half a period extra would be played on it.

A series of tweets from Don Cherry just now:

This is from the strange but true category.  +/-. Now I realize some players are put on the defensive zone change and others are on the offensive zone. All these guys that I'm talking about are guys that are put in on the offensive zone. Believe it or not, the leading scorer for Washington, Ovechkin is a -10. Pittsburgh's Malkin, the so called superstar is a -4. Every guy on San Jose is a +. Nashville does not have one guy +. Patrick Kane, Chicago's leading scorer on a first place club is a -4.  Strange but true.

I have literally no idea what his point is with all of that, but my favourite part is where he calls Malkin a "so called superstar". 575 points in 475 games. 3 100+ point seasons. A Hart trophy, Ted Lindsay award, two Art Ross', and a Conn Smyth trophy.

That's really weird, I thought Cherry actually liked Malkin.  Maybe he's getting forgetful in his old age.

Nice to see Cherry getting into advanced statistical analysis.

Should we mention the other guy whose last name is bookended by an 'S' and 'n' in another controversial Leaf trade?

Meanwhile 4 goals for Seguin tonight #ThankYouEriksson

That's 12 for him. Erikson meanwhile is basically invisible in Boston with only 4 goals. Even Peverely is lighting it up in Dallas.

I never really had anything against him while he was in Boston, but now that they traded him I'm definitely rooting for him. I always figured he'd be a star forward in this league. I still think Kessel's better, but Boston is definitely going to look like the loser of the 3 teams that trade has effected.

The only thing that can make a Leafs loss better is a Boston loss. Boston lost again Ottawa tonight blowing a two goal lead (something Boston hasn't done in a million games or so). Awesome!
