2013 Toronto Blue Jays Thread

Dickey needs to be given a chance to see what he can do (and it's certain he'll do better) considering the short time he's been with the Blue Jays.  The faithful believe he will improve.

Then again, if he continues to be a disappointment, he may end up to become the reincarnation of Bill Caudill (remember him)?

Oh I'm aware of that.  I think the point still stands that this is not something that will continue, so no point drawing too many conclusions from it.

Well, I agree that you can't read too much into one start but I don't know if we should just point to last year as evidence of what will or won't happen this year. Beyond the basic year to year inconsistencies that can hit pitchers there are, I think we can agree, more question marks surrounding Dickey than most.

This is partly my point. Dickey hardly has a long track record of success, so to point to numbers that turn around (in the last 3 years, all in the NL) is disregarding all the other indicators in his career (AL numbers that didn't turn around). I get that he's mastered the knuckleball, but the fact that he's getting smacked around doesn't leave me much faith in the only real pitch that he really has...

Will his numbers be this bad....I don't think so. Was he acquired to be ok/have to figure things out? Obviously not. If he's so great/unhittable (the reason we got him) then he needs to produce. Grace periods aren't really for guys you gut your system for IMO.

So far he's a total disappointment. To try and colour it otherwise is either incredibly patient or incredibly naive. Time will tell.

Well, Verlander and Cueto came back to earn quality starts but I remain okay with not freaking out over RAD just yet.

I'd like to think there's a difference between freaking out and being concerned with his first 2 outings. The guy isn't Halladay circa 2009 or Verlander the last few years. He's a guy with a patchwork of past history who's had a total of 3 good seasons, all in a different league.

He's stumbled out of the gate and we traded a lot for him. I don't see why we shouldn't be concerned...

Because he throws a knuckleball (that's getting hit)? Because he's the smartest man in baseball?

Sports are about performance and nothing else (really). Until he performs he's no better than Ricky Romero. Imagine what his first 2 starts would've looked like and what people would've said.

There is. I know.

That's what Spring Training is for!

But you literally have to only look to last season to see Dickey start in a very similar manner.  There's no point getting concerned until he does it over a greater period of time so you can see a trend.  If he figures it out and pitches like last season, no one will even remember this game happened.  No need to feel concerned about him yet.

Leave it to R.A. Dickey to explain...

"I think real fans understand that it is indeed a marathon,? Dickey said. ?We certainly aren?t leading the marathon at this point, but we have a lot of mileage to go. We?ve got a good ball club. There?s a lot of guys in here that have gotten off to some slow starts, myself included, and it?s only going to get better.?
