2015 NHL Entry Draft - Draft Day!

You know what I will say about Travis Dermott:

1st in OHL playoff scoring by a defenseman with 17 points
11th in overall OHL playoff scoring
T-12 in OHL defensman scoring during the regular season
6th in OHL scoring for defensemen in their draft year or younger

His offensive numbers are actually pretty solid.

That's it for the Leafs then. Not crazy about the Dermott and Nielsen picks but the Leafs really seemed to nail every single other one. Heck of a draft.

The McDermott pick is the one that undermines the rest of it.

Just so we're clear you've seen him play how many times?

One more than however many you have, my friend.

any guys go undrafted that the leafs could try to sign?  and that would be worth a look.

Saw this tweet:

Noel led his QMJHL team with 62 points in 66 games. Right-handed centre, listed at 5'11", 172 lbs. Central Scouting had him ranked 54th among North American skaters. Wonder what happened there.

At the very least.

Well, then I am all ears to hear why you think he was unworthy of being the #34 selection in the draft. I rarely get the chance to speak with someone so learned on OHL defensemen and am eager to hear, in great detail, what specific flaws in his game you think will make him a long shot to succeed at the NHL level.

Do I detect a note of sarcasm, soft as the blush on a new-ripened peach?

The point being that they had a #24 pick and then a 29 and then a 34.  I would argue that keeping 24 in a draft this deep was the right thing to do, but setting that aside they used their 34 to pick a guy who, as far as I can see, wasn't rated that high by many scouts.  NHL Central had him at 46, THN at 77, Last Word on Sports 57, etc.

We can argue individual rankings all you want but I bet when his from all sources are aggregated they won't be at 34.  So there is at least a reasonable chance they could have waited and gotten him later.  The only argument you can make for doing what they did is that they think he's better than anyone else in the draft who they could have gotten with 24 had they never traded it.  What I'm saying is, that's an argument that's on shaky ground.

No. The argument is that he and Bracco and the Latvian guy are, combined, better than anyone they could have drafted at 24. The whole point of trading down was to add those two picks so those two prospects are fundamentally material to the argument of them doing what they did.

As LK posted, Bob McKenzie had Dermott at 42. McKeen's had him at 30. Central scouting at 46. There's enough smart hockey people who had him solidly as a mid-second round pick that taking him where they did qualifies as a minor reach at best. Making a minor reach with a second round pick doesn't "undermine" the rest of the draft provided you're not a heroine in a Tennessee Williams play.

How many times have you seen him play.  If watching a player play gives you cred; how much do you have Nik?

Well, a smarter person than you would have seen my answer to that question in my next post but I'm not claiming to be an expert on this kid or any others. I'm saying that if you haven't seen him play then you're not really qualified to talk about him being a good or bad pick, which I haven't and as a result am not.

That's a retarded premise.  But extension from your argument; if you never saw McDavid you can't really say he is a good pick for the Oilers.

Ah, I sure do love watching the eloquence of an articulate, heated debate. Martin Luther incarnate??

I don't think you know how to use that word.
