2016-17 Centennial Leafs General Team Discussion

Sarcasm or no, I think all but the most rabid fans agree that they are in no position to get far in the playoffs.

Assuming the Leafs fall into the #3 spot in the Atlantic, their path to the Eastern Conference Finals likely goes through Ottawa and Montreal. Not exactly a gargantuan task.

The Leafs used to struggle against the sens in the regular season when they were beating them in the playoffs every spring.

Geez. Throw in a few nice pics, repeat your same argument 4 or 5 times, and anyone can write an article I guess. ???

"...I've also heard Toronto media guys say that he's not a great quote, so that doesn't help me connect to him quickly."

It's okay. A lot of people are having trouble with this form of persuasive argument.

I like the original's ending with the bird flying overhead and Rielly but I do like that the final segment now has Matthews/Marner/Nylander as the "This time we'll get it right" coda rather than, you know, Phaneuf and Bernier.

With Marner out day-to-day, lines now look like this:
Hyman - Matthews - Nylander
Komarov - Kadri - Leivo
JvR - Bozak - Brown
Martin - Smith - Soshnikov

PP1: Zaitsev, Bozak, Kadri, Leivo, JvR
PP2: Gardiner, Matthews, Brown, Nylander, Komarov

https://theathletic.com/39049/2017/02/17/maple-leafs-forward-ben-smith-hoping-trade-deadline-history-doesnt-repeat-itself/

The main takeaway from this piece is that every time Ben Smith was traded at the deadline, the team that moved him went on to the Stanley Cup finals (and that the recipient team missed the playoffs): 2015 Chicago to San Jose, then 2016 San Jose to Toronto.

Explaing how and why the Maple Leafs keep blowing third period leads
https://theathletic.com/38053/2017/02/20/explaing-how-and-why-the-maple-leafs-keep-blowing-third-period-leads/

Like any healthy relationship (and synchronized swimming), it's all about trust, communication, and taking care of executing your own role.

Not that this stat means a lot, but -- due to the flack he gets here on this site -- I find it somewhat amusing that Gardiner is far-and-away the team leader in +/-. It's not even close. He's also top 25 in the league.
