2017-2018 NHL Thread

Not sure where to post this, but has anyone watched Ice Guardians on Netflix?

Mrs. Wigwal and I are about halfway through it and it's pretty enjoyable so far. I think it does a good job of celebrating what people love about fighting in hockey and also asks the tough questions about the consequences for the players and also the diminishing role of these types of players in the NHL.

It's not on Canadian Netflix, sadly.

It?s probably worth noting that Korshkov has been coming back from a significant leg injury, he looked very promising beforehand, hopefully he can get back there.

I swear, the one year I build my fantasy team around Edmonton not being a garbage factory...

I wouldn't mind seeing the Oilers take a step back again what with all the constant McDavid love, but I don't want them winning the lottery again.

Soooo why did Vegas trade away Calvin Pickard for literally nothing? They have two other goalies in their organization and neither are even close to being NHL-calibre. A couple of weeks ago McPhee also flat out said Malcolm Subban isn't ready to play at the NHL level either despite keeping him on the roster.

Not that it necessarily explains every weird decision they're making in Vegas but McPhee is in a tricky situation where tanking probably isn't good for building the fanbase and the cap makes it tricky to tank but competitively he absolutely is in a position where he should be tanking.

So panic set in after they won the first handful and Picard was traded. McPhee is a genius!

No, I'm saying that when they made decisions like acquiring Subban or trading Pickard they maybe weren't overly concerned with "what if this goes wrong and we lose a bunch of games?".

Here?s an embarrassing question: is there a difference between a ?hat trick? and a ?natural hat trick??  What is the difference?

A natural hat trick is 3 consecutive goals in the same game, as opposed simply scoring 3 goals in the game.

Like busta says but, fwiw, I've always thought the term "natural hatrick" and making a deal of it doesn't make sense.

It's baffling that Vegas let Pickard go for essentially nothing.  That said, Subban is currently shutting out his old Boston team in the 3rd, 2-0.

Thanks!  I am better educated now!

Agreed. It's a completely meaningless distinction.

Not really.  One player scoring three times in a row is cooler.  Moreover, if you can do it in 21 seconds you get to be a legend.

I'm with Zanzibar on this one.  Having scored hatricks and natural hatricks a few times through my years in youth and beer league hockey there is definitely a distinction and its not meaningless.  Especially if you can do it in 21 seconds :)

Huh... I always thought a natural hattrick was when all 3 goals are scored with the goalie in.  IE: an empty net goal makes it not natural.

It's only tangentially NHL news but the Flames probably aren't happy that Naheed Nenshi has been re-elected Mayor of Calgary.

Or, as one team employee put it in very reasonable terms that have very appropriate perspective:
